The celebrations that had to be expected to honor the historic first IPL title of Royal Challengers, turned into a horrible tragedy, in which eleven people lose their lives and more than 50 were injured in a rush outside the iconic M. Chinnaswamy stage of Bengaluru. Months after the incident, RCB’s director of Cricket, Mo Bobat, asked the franchise to honor the victims and to ensure that their memories remain an integral part of the team’s heritage.
The incident, which took place on 4 June, witnessed thousands of fans who gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate the Maiden IPL title win of RCB. The crowd surpassed the capacity of the stadium far, and with deposit of barriers and no effective crowd control, which resulted in a rush that resulted in the 11 innocent lives claimed and left dozens injured. RCB immediately announced a reimbursement of INR 10 Lakh for the family of each victim and launched the “RCB Cares” fund to offer medical and financial support to the injured.
“Cricket and the IPL are so much about passion and pleasure, and one of our greatest motivators are our fans. We spoke during the competition that we want to win it for our fans. They have been the patient. Some of us have been new. These fans have waited 18 years, but for them their lives are able to recognize those people. Team has an inheritance.
RCB, Event Partners, KSCA held responsible for Stampede
The Stampede also led to a government investigation led by the judiciary John Michael d’Cunha. The committee announced the ChinnasWamy Stadium as fundamentally unsafe for organizing large -scale events. The design, lack of adequate access and principles, poor emergency salertness and absence of good public access systems were all mentioned as serious safety risks.
The report held RCB, its event partners and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) that is responsible for mismanagement, while also recommending disciplinary measures against various officials.
As a direct consequence, the stadium was dropped as a location for the upcoming ICC Ladies Odi World Cup 2025. Competitions, including a semi-final and possibly the final, are now being organized in the DY Patil Stadium of Navi Mumbai.
