It wasn’t a nice game. It was not an efficient game.
The starter of the rays could not pass the fourth. Two men were able to get into scoring position because of the rays.
If my mathematics is correct, Rays -wergers threw 174 throws.
If my eyes didn’t cheat on me, Rays -stroke people threw out 12 times.
In fact, this is exactly the kind of “no one is at its best, but we have won anyway” who was missing this season; If the rays had spoken a few ugly victories this season, a lot would look different.
The rays moved back to an early lead. With two out in the first inning, Yandy Diaz and Brandon Lowe, for whom the Washington area is close to home, set up a home run:
But Starter Adrian Houser strangled struggled to keep that leadership. The Nationals scored on a walk, a single and a pocket fly to make the score 2-1.
While the cousin kept struggling, it seemed unlikely that the management would be. Two nationals hit the second. A double, a walk and a beam in the third. Loading the bases on two singles and a walk in the fourth.
No wonder Kevin Cash quickly went to his (presumably equipped) bullpen. And those bullpen did not stop the NATS to get on the board, although Washington had at least one runner on the base in every inning. In fact, they had 12 hits and they walked four times, it seems almost mathematically impossible to have so many base runners and only get away with a single run. It would have been a miserable night to be a Nat fan.
One of the reasons why the NATS did not score again was that Chandler Simpson came up with two excellent defensive plays. Since his defense is much malignant due to both the statistics “nerds” and the “Experts” eye test, it is quite nice to see that he is a difference maker with his glove.
In the second inning he threw Daylen Lile in third place when he had tried to go on a single to the left field. Given how shaky house maker was, it was huge to exchange a runner in third place.
Then, in the bottom of the third, with runners on second and third base, Chandler caught this sinking line drive for the third:
After the home run of Lowe, not much (except many whiffs) happened before the rays. It seemed that those two runs might be enough, but in the fifth inning, Everson Pereira offered an insurance run, his first major League explosion.
A Chandler Simpson RBI-Single offered even more insurance in the top of the ninth, making it much less stressful when Pete Fairbanks gave up two, two-out hits before he registered a last strikeout to end the game.
Only one last thought, why do the Nationals, a team that had the first and I believe that the best City Connect sweaters in the competition issue a second round of the city connections that are completely forgetable?
The old: great colors with a palate that you rarely see in professional sports; Iconic cherry blossoms that evoke the best of Washington in the spring. The new: a blue shadow that should look like denim (but not). I get the idea of the street schedule, but how is that distinctive? Every city has a grid!
But I think this is appropriate for a team that had a brilliant run to the World Series in 2019 and has not done anything since then.
