It’s not every day that we empty the entire bench at a hockey game. But tonight in the game between New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings we saw exactly that.
As the final buzzer sounded and both teams headed to their respective goaltenders after the Red Wings won the game 2-1, some players had other ideas. They became involved in a huge battle just beyond the Rangers blue line as the game ended in pure chaos with both benches clear.

The reason for clearing the benches was a small action at the end of the game by Mason Appleton. As time went on, Appleton fired the puck into the empty net and at first it didn’t seem to bother the Rangers players that much. Until Jonathan Quick came off the bench and everything changed.
Quick went straight for Appleton and started throwing punches with his blocker and glove on. Then chaos ensued and every player from both teams was involved. It quickly became a huge dog pile of almost 50 players, something that NHL fans hardly ever see. The interaction ended with cooler heads, but it was still nice to see both sides leave the benches and get involved to support their teammates so quickly.
