Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that the Rangers are sending infielder Marcus Semien to the Mets. In return, outfielder Brandon Nimmo will go to Texas. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported that Nimmo will waive its no-trade clause to allow trading to continue.
Passan had reported Tuesday that the Mets made Nimmo available for trade. However, SNY’s Andy Martino called those talks preliminary and reported that Nimmo had not been approached at the time about waiving its no-trade clause to facilitate a deal.
Texas Rangers and New York Mets make a surprise deal to address needs
Semien was a three-time All-Star a brutal start to the seasonposting a .173/.260/.224 batting line with three home runs and one double over 223 plate appearances through May 28. He then started hitting as his .270/.338/.464 batting line with 12 home runs and 15 doubles left his last 311 at bats was more in line with his typical production.
Semien’s value goes beyond his offense. He was one of the best defensive second basemen in baseball, saving 47 runs in seven seasons at the cornerstone while lead the American League with 13 runs saved in 2025. President of baseball operations David Stearns said improving the Mets’ defense would be a point of attention this offseason, as adding Semien is a step in that direction.
Nimmo, meanwhile, could be seen as a replacement for outfielder Adolis Garcia, who was not offered a contract. He has emerged as one of the steadier players in baseball and has moved past the injury issues that dogged his early career. Nimmo posted a solid .262/.324/.436 batting line during his 652 plate appearances in 2025, hitting 25 home runs and 27 doubles.
This may not be the last big deal for either franchise. The Mets are looking to revamp the roster, with pitcher Kodai Senga and second baseman/outfielder Jeff McNeil reportedly on the trading block. The Rangers were expected to reduce their payroll, but they also want to return to the postseason. Sunday’s trading may be just the beginning.
