Quentin Grimes officially saves 76 people from confronted with devastating schedule reality

After months of negotiations, deliberations and painful indecision, Quentin Grimes finally returned to the Philadephia 76ers. Grimes accepted his qualifying offer, so that he spends the 2025-26 season with the 76 people before entering an unlimited free agency in 2026.

In the trial, Grimes saved Philadelphia to go through the 2025-26 season without the size, circumference and versatility they need along the wings.

At least 80 percent of the starting line -up of the 76 people seems to be etched in stone, with Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe share the defense half, and Paul George and Joel Embiid anchor the Frontcourt. Injury and availability will go a long way to decide how often that quartet shares the court, but their potential is inevitable.

Embiid is an MVP, George is a five-fold all-nba-honoree, and Maxey is an all-star, while Edgecombe is one of the most famous prospects that comes from the NBA design of 2025.

Many have wondered who the fifth starter will be, but now that he has been signed, Grimes seems to be a leader. He started 25 of his 28 performances with the 76 people in 2024-25 and offers a combination of size, shooting and two-way potential that the team would otherwise have difficulty identifying.

There are a number of players on the Roster with unused potential, but Grimes gives Philadelphia his best chance of creating a coherent and reliable starting setup.

Philadelphia could possibly start a second-year guard Jared McCain as soon as he returns from the UCL-TRAAN he recently suffered in his right thumb. Their backcourt combination in that situation, however, would be Maxey, 6’2 “and McCain, 6’3” – and neither of the players is known for their defense.

Edgecombe projects such as an excellent defender and George is one of the best defensive wings of his era, but there is only so much a Rookie and a 35-year-old veteran can be expected to cover himself.

Kelly Oubre Jr. Is another option to start with, but he is a career 29.3 percent shooter from outside the arch in a team that already has a reason to wonder how efficient Edgecombe can be like a rookie. Oubre will certainly be run with the starters, but his inefficiency of three -point range makes him a questionable fit as a full -time member of the starting five.

There is an intriguing property to give Justin Edwards, Jabari Walker or Trendon Watford, but their inexperience in rolls with a high volume suggests that patience is a better option.

That ultimately leaves Grimes as the best choice to prevent the construction of a starting set -up that misses an ideal size and shooting along the wings. He measured on 6’5.25 “without shoes at the NBA concept of 2021 and has a strong frame of 210 pounds and a 6’8” wingspan.

What is even more important: Grimes is a career of 37.5 percent three-point shooter whose breakout campaign with the 76 people in 2024-25 can be more sustainable than it seems.

76ers’ alternative options for starting 5 lack of size, experience or shooting

In 28 games with the 76 people, an average of 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.9 three -point field goals made at .469/.373/.752 shooting. For what it is worth: it has a creepy similar career slash line from .444/.375/.763 and placed the full seasonal averages of 19.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.9 three-point field goals made per 36 minutes in 75 matches.

With this in mind, there is at least one reason to believe that he can produce in a similar way in 2025-26 if he did with the 76ers in 2024-25.

Whether that will flourish or not, it means that he has been an effective three -point shooter during his career. In three of his four seasons, he bury at least 38.1 percent of his attempts from outside the arch and played twice more than 35 percent of his minutes at Small Forward.

With positional versatility, ideal size and power for a modern wing and the shooting to thrive both with and without the ball, Grimes is the missing piece of the Philadelphia starting setup.
