When it comes to relationships, it’s usually the little things that keep love alive.

Now a psychologist has unveiled a simple trick that the couple can make 20 percent feel happier.

Although sharing the wash may seem like a small gesture, experts say it can have a surprisingly positive impact.

Dr. Hannah Lawson, who has more than 12 years of experience in relationship guidance and behavioral psychology, said that those who do the dishes together often report that they feel closer, more respected and generally feel happier.

And she explained that working together on this daily task of honesty, teamwork and a sense of partnership builds up – the happiness of couples with an average of one fifth.

“If you even share little chores, you show each other that you are right,” she said.

“And that is often much more powerful than large romantic gestures.”

When the dishes are left to only one person, this can cause feelings of resentment or imbalance, she added.

Sharing the job and standing side by side means that couples can talk about their day, coordinate plans or simply spend quiet moments together without interruptions.

It can also build trust by building the confidence that every person can trust each other – even with everyday things.

Other advantages include keeping the kitchen cleaner, discouraging vermin such as ants and flies, and learning children to see teamwork in action.

Working together can even save water by consolidating dishwashing in one joint effort, Dr. Lawson.

“See it as a small daily ritual that you pay back with confidence, respect and a stronger emotional connection,” she added.

Tips to get started with shared dishwashing are alternating who washes and who dries, and playing music to make it more pleasant.

Treating it as a daily routine, instead of a punishment, can also help, said Dr. Lawson.

And no matter how tempting it is, try to prevent them from criticizing each other’s style.

A company spokesperson said: ‘A simple five-minute routine can keep your sink clear and your relationship healthier.

‘Washing Together is one of those small habits that can make a huge difference.

“It supports better hygiene, fairness and even improves your emotional well -being as a few.”
