Proton’s upcoming factory for electric vehicles (EV) in Tanjong Malim is working well, whereby the car manufacturer announces that the facility is on schedule to start production in September. The company noted that the building is currently 90.4% complete and that the installation of equipment is 83.5% for a total progress of 86.9%. This is only six months after the site was broken in February of this year.
As previously unveiled, the factory will produce several models based on the GLA platform of the Global Modular Architecture (GMA), with the EMAS 7 that rolls the first of the line during mid-September. Then comes the EMAS 5, which still has to be launched, but more than once viewed.
According to Proton, the EV factory in Tanjong Malim was designed with scalability in mind to adapt it to future models and production volumes. Initially, the factory will have a planned capacity of 20,000 units annually, whereby the figure rises to 45,000 in the course of time based on the local and overseas demand.

Different from the production of internal combustion motor cars, the new facility will contain specialized battery assembly, high-voltage safety and electrical tests, made with tailor-made layouts for flat EV undercodions and electric drive units.
“For important areas, every line can add different stations, where their test lines are modular and able to accommodate platform variations or multimodel production. In the logistics area, the plant is able to expand to future expansion, with its logistics electricity and storage systems to support both local and export markets,” the company said in the Release.
“Infrastructure Such as utility Systems, Material Handling Paths, and Digital Traceability Tools Like Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Warehouse Management System (WMS) Are already in Place to Support Future Scaleup Significant Tryding Redesign Already Been Completed to Ensure Equipment Readiness Before Calibration, Validation and Full-Scale Production.

Proton also pointed out that it is currently aimed at hiring critical operational and technical staff for the factory. To date, it has added 30 non-versions with Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) and diploma qualifications, with the aim of fully training these important persons before the entire production starts.
This will ultimately lead to 200 new roles in EV industrialization and technical services. The company also works together with Polytechnic Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS) for syllabus input and hands-on training to build its talent pipeline.
Helping Proton on his path to local EV production is long-term partner GEYY, which offered technical guidelines for production systems, helped with the selection of equipment and implemented experts to help with installation and test runs. The Chinese Automaker also facilitated overseas training for staff and ensured that the factory was in line with the global EV production standards.
