Why would a Proton eMas 7, which has been launched in Malaysia for almost a year now, need to be camouflaged? There is only one possible reason: this must be the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. Those alloys certainly don’t look like those of the Prime or the Premium; they look more like the multi-spokers on the Geely EX5/Starray/Galaxy Starship 7 EM-i, which is, yes, the PHEV. We thank reader Naiim for these spy shots.
The name eMas 7 PHEV was registered as a trademark back in September 2024. If this happens, it will be Proton eMas’ first PHEV. What can we expect? Well, Australia gets a 1.5-litre BHE15PFI 99hp/125Nm engine (remember this?), a 218hp/320Nm electric motor, an 18.4kWh LFP battery, a 0-100km/h time of eight seconds and a top speed of 170km/h.
Other figures include a WLTP range of 84 km on electricity alone or 943 km combined, a claimed fuel consumption of 2.4 liters per 100 km, a claimed electricity consumption of 14.7 kWh per 100 km, up to 6 kW AC and 30 kW DC charging, 6 kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) and a luggage capacity of 428 liters which becomes 2,065 liters if you take the rear seats folds down.

There are two variants Down Under. Standard are 225/55R18 tires, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.4-inch center touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, six speakers, automatic climate control and power-adjustable front seats. The higher variant gets 235/50R19 tires and adds a panoramic sunroof, a 13.4-inch head-up display, wireless charging, 16 1,000-watt Flyme speakers, a power tailgate, front parking sensors, 256-color ambient lighting, ventilated front seats and driver seat memory.
Safety? Both variants in Australia get AEB, ACC, ICC, rear cross traffic alert and braking, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, door opening alert, lane change assist, blind spot detection, emergency lane assist, occupant detection alert and driver fatigue alert.
As with the Starship 7 – the original car – there are continuous light bars front and rear, split headlights and normal door handles, but the left- and right-hand drive interior is not the same – the right-hand drive version is actually the eMas 7’s, which should make things easier for Tanjong Malim when he starts producing this. Launch when? Next year is a good bet, don’t you think?
