Matt Every had his reasons.
The former PGA Tour knows the story sounds bad. By definition, it is difficult to justify deliberately hitting the ball out of bounds as a professional golfer.
And yet Every did just that during the final holes of a march to a missed cut at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village. Why? He and his caddy were bickering as the round wound down.
“I’m going to look so bad,” Every said GOLF Subpar podcast co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stolz. “I was along [caddie Derek Mason]. We were confused for a moment. It was the Memorial. I would miss the cutout. I finished the front. [It was to the point] where even if I went eagle, bird, bird, I still missed [the cut]. The math was not math. We are ready.”
The walk back from the sixth green to the par-5 seventh tee is long, and Mason opted to play the hole as a front caddy. So he handed Every his driver and waited.
“He knows I hate it when he plays for caddies,” Every recalled. “We fought like brothers. This was a two-way relationship. This wasn’t caddy abuse. This was me giving it to him. We walk back and I’m playing with Brian Stuard and I think [Jason] Kokrak could be the other guy. I say, ‘That piece of crap hanging up there.’ And Stuard’s guy says, “I bet you don’t hit him out of bounds on purpose.” And I thought, ‘Yes, I will. Which way do you want to go, right or left?’ So I went to the right. The bet was that he had to come back and hand me the ball. He couldn’t throw it away. It was so hot. He starts coming up the hill, and I don’t look at him. He hands me the ball and they all start laughing. The rest is history.”
