Prithviraj Chavan sparks row by saying ‘India defeated on Op Sindoor day 1’

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan’s statement on Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, sparked a major political controversy. However, he refused to apologize for his controversial statement, saying he had not said anything wrong.

“I have not said anything wrong and there is no question of apology. Our Constitution has given me the right to ask questions,” Chavan said, refusing to apologize for his controversial claims that India was defeated on the first day of Operation Sindoor.

Chavan said that Indian planes were shot down on the first day of Operation Sindoor and India was completely defeated.

“On the first day (of Operation Sindoor), we were completely defeated. During the half-hour dogfight that took place on May 7, we were completely defeated whether people accept it or not. Indian aircraft were shot down. The air force was completely grounded and not a single aircraft flew,” Chavan said.

“If any plane had taken off from Gwalior, Bathinda or Sirsa, there was a high probability that it would be shot down by Pakistan, which is why the air force was completely grounded,” he added.

The former Maharashtra Chief Minister also questioned the need to maintain an army of twelve lakh soldiers, saying that there was not even a movement of one kilometer of the army during Operation Sindoor.

“Recently, during Operation Sindoor, we saw that the army could not move even for a kilometer… What happened for two or three days was just an air war and missile war. In the future too, wars will be fought in the same manner. In such a situation, do we really need to maintain an army of 12 lakh soldiers, or can we make them do other work?” said the Congress leader.

In an apparent attempt to stoke communal violence in India, Pakistan-backed attackers stormed a village in Pahalgam on April 22 this year, asked people, mostly tourists, about their religion and killed them, leaving 26 dead. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, hitting nine locations linked to terror groups in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
