PREVIEW: Guam, Philippines is the next choice for Boomers

The road to Qatar continues and the Boomers are ready to make their move.

The Boomers are back for Window Two of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers with a crucial two-match tour of Guam and the Philippines.

Australia will head to the University of Guam in Mangilao for Thursday’s match before heading to Manila, Philippines, on Sunday, March 1, for a pair of matches that will determine the group standings.

The Boomers are undefeated thus far and are tied with the Gilas in Group A.

The campaign started with an iconic double against New Zealand’s Tall Blacks.

Window One started in Tasmania last November with a classic 84 – 7 9 win at MyState Bank Arena in Hobart. The Boomers backed it up two days later, helped by some late-game heroics from Davo Hickey, who drained the buzzer-beater to overcome the Kiwis 77 – 79 in Wellington.

There are 16 countries, divided into four groups, competing for qualification in FIBA Asia.

The next step in Australia’s progress depends on reaching the first group stage. The Boomers finish in the top three of Group A to progress, with the incoming window and another home stint later this year.

If they make progress, phase two awaits. The Boomers and their counterparts from Group A will be paired with the best players from Group C, which consists of Jordan, Iran, Iraq and Syria.

Once stage two is complete and the dust settles, only the top eight (technically seven) remain. * Qatar has already qualified as a host country.
