Premier League Team of the Week: Thiaw, James, Foden

Our Premier League Team of the Week honors the best performers from the weekend’s action, with names from Chelsea, Liverpool and Sunderland.
Goalkeeper: Robert Sánchez – Chelsea

Answered some of his critics with a top performance as Chelsea held Arsenal with 10 men. A fantastic stop from Bukayo Saka kept Arsenal out early, and he landed well to keep out Gabriel Martinelli. The Spaniard’s brave block denied Viktor Gyokeres late on and allowed Chelsea to claim a precious point.

Right back: Joe Gomez – Liverpool

Proven a point for Arne Slot after being largely overlooked this season. Sounded defensive and showed a forward threat that you don’t see often.

One brilliant ball at the back set Florian Wirtz free, while his long throws caused problems for West Ham throughout. Gomez got a late assist after crossing to Cody Gakpo to round out the work of a pleasant afternoon.

Center back: Joachim Andersen – Fulham

Led Fulham to an important win against an under-par Spurs team. Andersen’s usual raking distribution was on display with eight long passes completed, although the Dane stood out defensively. He won 6/7 defensive duels and collected a whopping 13 ball victories, as Fulham cleared a slew of Tottenham crosses.

Center back: Malick Thiaw – Newcastle United

Has received plenty of plaudits for his early performances in a Newcastle shirt, but none are more striking than this.

The German defender looked at ease defensively against Everton and showed his attacking instincts with two goals at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. A night to remember for the summer signing.

Left back: Lewis Hall – Newcastle United

If Lewis Hall can stay fit this season, there is every chance the 21-year-old could be England’s starting left-back at the World Cup.

Hall played a key role as Newcastle defeated Everton, with a delightful throw setting up Malick Thiaw’s second goal. Press-resistant, creative and full of commitment: Hall has the qualities of the English left back in the long term.

Midfield: Lewis Miley – Newcastle United

Newcastle have one of the Premier League’s best midfield trios, but Lewis Miley gave Eddie Howe a selection headache this weekend.

The academy graduate was outstanding in the club’s comfortable victory over Evertom, scoring once and netting a second on Merseyside. He is determined to get rid of more experienced staff.

Midfield: Enzo Le Fee – Sunderland

His best performance so far in the Premier League. Orchestrated an incredible turnaround for Sunderland against Bournemouth as the Black Cats recovered from two goals down to win 3-2 at the Stadium of Light.

The Frenchman confidently converted his penalty and set up Brian Brobbey for the crucial winner.

Midfield: Reece James – Chelsea

A real captain’s performance from James, who ensured that Chelsea fought to a draw against leaders Arsenal with ten men.

James is starting to feel at home in central midfield and played a key role in winning games after Moises Caicedo’s red fog. Kept everything running and offered calm when others around him struggled to stay calm. An excellent ball provided the opening goal for Trevoh Chalobah.

Right: Phil Foden – Manchester City

Manchester City was only eliminated late against Leeds. Foden’s fantastic guided finish had opened the scoring in the opening minute for City, who doubled their lead not long after through Josko Gvardiol.

A spirited Leeds battle threatened to let the visitors escape by a point, but Foden took the win with good footwork and a sharp attack. It’s great to see that the midfielder is almost back to his best.

Left wing: Maxim De Cuyper – Brighton

The full-back played further forward for Brighton and enjoyed the greater freedom against Nottingham Forest. In addition to a series of dangerous throws, the Belgian arrived in the penalty area to cap off a nice team move and open the scoring.

Forward: Igor Thiago – Brentford

What a season this will be for Igor Thiago. A second-half double from the Brazilian helped Brentford sink Burnley, giving Thiago 11 league goals before Christmas. A cold-blooded penalty and a predatory try did the damage, with the 24-year-old recovering from last season’s injury nightmare to flourish.
