Michael van Gerwen’s hope to reach the Betmgm Premier League play-offs, was terminated by a red-hot Nathan Aspinall during the last evening of League Action in Sheffield.
Aspinall and Van Gerwen went against each other to join Luke Littler, Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price in the season-dependent play-offs.
Van Gerwen knew that only a nocturnal victory is sufficient in Sheffield in an attempt to win a record-expanding eighth Premier League title, but ‘the ASP’ dominated from the start to build on his dominant recent record about his besieged opponent.
Aspinall defeated ‘The Green Machine’ on the way to claiming a crucial nocturnal victory in Aberdeen last Thursday, giving him a four -point lead over the Dutch superstar on the way to Night 16.
They renewed their rivalry in the second quarterfinals of the evening, with Stockport Star Aspinall an average of 98.72 and in a great cash register of 124 to seal an emphatic 6-2 victory and to confirm his place on the O2 in London on Thursday 29 May Live on Sky Sports.
It means that Van Gerwen has not been eligible for the play-offs for the second time in 13 Premier League performances, ending the season without a nocturnal victory in the Premier League since April 2024, when he defeated Aspinall, Michael Smith and Littler to triumph in Birmingham.
“There was a lot of emotion after walking away from the stage. I had to take myself away,” Aspinall said after his victory Glen Durrant Backstage. “I spoke so much about Michael all week that he could win the night.
“I don’t know what’s going on, but he didn’t see himself tonight. Even on that stage he gave up.”
Mardle: No play-offs is a big blow to MVG
Wayne-Mardle from Sky Sports felt that since then Van Gerwen Berlin has missed because of a shoulder injury that he has not looked at and feels that missing the play-offs is a “massive blow” in a period in which he has no confidence.
“I feel for Michael. The man is a champion, a winner,” said ‘Hawaii 501’. “It is only the second time that he has not made the play-offs. He said it, he has sometimes not been good enough.
“I don’t know how he feels inside, he has just looked away. To not have won a week, he won four last year, that’s a real blow to him.
“He came into this as the third favorite behind the Lukes and it all went well. Then it took a bit of a turn for the worst.
“I don’t know how bad the injury was, but since he missed Berlin, he has played something well in my opinion.”
It was only appropriate that the two best players in the world ended the competition phase of the Premier League meeting in the final.
Littler shows his steel to win in Sheffield
Littler and Humphries stood opposite each other in their fifth Premier League final of the campaign with both players who share the last four previous meetings – Including one of the biggest matches of all time last week in Aberdeen.
‘The Nuke’ made an impressive start by conquering the first two legs, but Humphries hit back, but only after a bizarre series of events such as the World No 1 Bust 120 initially by hit 140 before he only returns to eliminate it the second time to ask the game.
Littler landed D5 to break the pitch and he turned on the after -burners thanks to a sensational 155 cash register before he faltered in ‘The Big Fish’ to move a way of victory.
Littler, however, missed a competition zest, so Humphries could save his skin on D11. But the Warrington Ace sealed the victory over D6 in the next leg to end the competition phase with a sixth nocturnal title.
Littler: I am very ready for semi -final
“It is a difficult size, but I have myself through it. I am very happy to be great and to break all these records again,” Littler told host Emma Paton after his victory.
“I’m very ready. I am ready for the semi -final [against Gerwyn Price]. “It’s the O2. I’ve been there before, I have won a semi -final there, but Gerwyn too. I look forward to it.”
And talking about his rivalry with Humpler, Littler added: “In the Premier League there is always points for grabbing, there is always the £ 10,000 bonus, so we always play for something.
“For myself it is probably just a warming up.”
How Littler and Humphries the last …
An ominous smaller Littler called for a crushing 6-1 quarter-final victory on Stephen Bunting with no less than 114.37 on average, and hit three tons-plus cash register and 6/6 on the Doubles and surpassed his own 40-point record to continue to 42 points in the process.
“A sensational achievement by Luke Littler,” said Stuart Pyke on comment.
Former Premier League champion Durrant added: “He just makes the game look easy. Something about the calmness, the Swagger. What a feeling must be there if you know that you are at the top of your game.”
Littler then hit six of the seven Doubles and hit two tons-plus finishes, including a stylish 128 to beat Aspinall for a sixth victory in a row to rise in a ninth night final of the season.
‘The ASP’ withdrew to the conditions of 4-1 before the world champion resumed normal service with a clinical 128-box to redesign the upper hand and to round the victory on top after threatening a nine-darter after six perfect arrows.
From 5-1 down Chris Dobey came to Gerwyn Price in a decisive leg – surviving match darts en route.
‘Hollywood’ hit in eight 180s and on average 108.91.
“He is so lucky, right?” Durrant joked. “Prize will dust himself and come back next week. He has a good record against Littler. He will enjoy the chance.”
Humphries came back from 2-0 when he won six of the next eight legs to beat Rob Cross and book a semi-final place. He also threw in 10 140s and an average of 97.41.
‘Cool Hand’ then in his eighth nocturnal final of the campaign, while he abandoned Dobey with an average of 106.04 and 60 percent on the Doubles in an emphatic 6-2 success.
