Premier League Awards: Fantastic Fernandes, Dorgie Best!

Our Premier League Awards honor the best – and worst – action of the weekend, featuring Mateus Fernandes, Patrick Dorgu and Virgil van Dijk.
Moment of the week

What a week it has been Manchester United And Michael Carrick.

A win over Manchester City on derby day could have been down to the new manager’s recovery, but Sunday’s success at Arsenal felt more. United blew open the title race with an upset of the north London leaders, who came from behind to claim a 3-2 win at the Emirates.

A stunning goal from Matheus Cunha secured victory late on for United, who became the first side to win at the Emirates this season. It was Arsenal’s first league win since 2017 and the first time Arsenal have been defeated after taking charge this season.

Back-to-back wins over the Premier League’s top two could have catapulted Carrick into contention for the permanent gig.

Player of the week

Regardless of whether West Ham go down this season or not, the Irons will have a fight to hang on Matthew Fernandes. The summer signing was a bright spark in an otherwise sad season and produced a brilliant performance in this weekend’s win over Sunderland.

At the London Stadium he was everywhere to lift West Ham to back-to-back victories. The 21-year-old won 100% of his ground duels (7/7), led the game for tackles (5/5), misplaced just one of his nine attempted long passes and also scored an absolute cracker.

A top performance from the midfielder.

Goal of the week

Perhaps no player has had a longer life under Michael Carrick then Patrick Dorgu.

The Denmark international looked quite ordinary as a full-back under Ruben Amorim, but continues to enjoy his football under the interim manager. After scoring in last weekend’s derby win over Manchester City, Dorgu was at it again against Arsenal. However, this goal will be repeated for some time to come. What a hit.

Rescue of the week

Lewis Miley must have thought he had scored here. The Newcastle midfielder’s strike was met by a full-length save from Emi Martinezwho completed his 200th Premier League appearance with a clean sheet.

More importantly for Aston Villa, it was Newcastle’s first win in 21 years.

Statistic of the week

Liam Rosenior called Estevao Willian a ‘special talent’ and it’s hard to disagree with the evidence we’ve seen this season.

The winger this weekend became the youngest Chelsea player in 33 years to score and assist in a Premier League match.

Star boy.

A week to forget…

Virgil van Dijk. The Liverpool captain has set the standard for centre-backs during his time at Liverpool, but is currently in a rut. Van Dijk failed to deal with a long ball in the build-up to Bournemouth’s opener this weekend, before putting Alex Jimenez aside for the second.

The Dutch defender should not be guilty of Liverpool’s vulnerability this season, but the Reds’ recruitment team must also take it into account. The failure to land Marc Guehi last summer was costly and necessitated the need to squeeze every ounce out of their captain, who is fast approaching his 35th birthday.

Liverpool’s reliance on Van Dijk to play every minute has become a sticking point again this season.
