Pregnant woman killed over inter-caste marriage in Karnataka; husband, in-laws injured

In a case of reported honor killing, a pregnant young woman, who had returned to the village several months after her inter-caste marriage, was attacked with deadly weapons, resulting in her death in hospital. Her husband and in-laws also suffered injuries.

The brutal attack took place on Sunday (December 21, 2025) at Inam Veerapur village near Belagali of Hubballi taluk and the pregnant woman and the baby in her womb succumbed to the injuries on Sunday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Manya Vivekanad Doddamani (19). Her husband Vivekananda Doddamani and his parents too have been injured and are admitted to a private hospital in Hubballi.

After the incident, Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya, Hubballi Dharwad Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar and Inspector Murugesh Channannavar visited Hubballi hospital to collect details of the injured. As a precaution, security around the hospital and in the village has been tightened.

According to SP Gunjan Arya, two persons, namely Prakashgouda Patil and Arungouda Patil, have been taken into custody and a case has been registered against eight persons. The reasons for the assault and murder are being investigated.

Manya Patil had married Vivekanand Doddamani (from the same village) in the month of May 2025, who belonged to a different caste, which the girl’s parents had strongly opposed. Subsequently, the tahsildar and police intervened, calling for a truce from both families and registering a case as a precautionary measure. However, due to reported threat to their lives, the couple had moved to Haveri.

Sources said the couple returned to the village on December 8 and on Sunday (December 21, 2025), Manya’s father and others attacked Mr Vivekananda and his father, who were working in the fields. They then barged into the house and attacked Manya, her mother-in-law Mrs. Renavva and others in the house.

Manya, who was seriously injured, was rushed to a private hospital in Hubballi where she succumbed to the injuries along with the baby in her womb.
