Predicting the Dodgers roster (and rotation plan) for the 2025 World Series – Dodgers Digest

Hello and welcome to the latest version of these posts. It’s been a fun ride all postseason and thankfully there doesn’t seem to be many major changes in store for the Evaders. The specialists will carry over from previous rounds to their World Series match against the Blue jaysand for winning the NLCS over the Brewers in one fell swoop, so will the rotation plan.

Indeed, there literally seems to be one change afoot. Maybe.

Honestly, this post is probably just to sort out some thoughts.

======

Here’s a prediction on what the Dodgers’ roster could look like for the seven-game World Series.

Catchers (2)

Will Smith
Ben Rortvedt

Infielders (4)

Freddie Vrijman
Mookie Betts
Max Muncy
Miguel Rojas

Outfielders (4)

Andy Pages
Teoscar Hernández
Alex Bell
Justin Dean

Usefulness (3)

Tommy Edman
Enrique Hernández
Hyeseong Kim

Unicorn (1)

Shohei Ohtani

There doesn’t seem to be any discussion at the moment.

I think it might be worth considering whether that is the case Alex Bell is a bad fit considering the lack of lefties for the Blue Jays, but I’m willing to bet he’s earned the team’s trust as a bench bat and they won’t do something as insane as Michael Conforto on the selection only because of dexterity at this point. And if the Blue Jays make the choice to neutralize a lefty at the bottom of the order, he (and Miguel Rojas) could be a valuable option against one of their three or four lefty relievers who haven’t exactly been great thus far.

The lineup will likely have to show up more than in the NLDS and NLCS because of the matchup, and hopefully they will.

Starters (4)

Blake Snell
Yoshinobu Yamamoto
Tyler Glasnow
Shohei Ohtani

Bullpen (9)

Blake Treinen
Alex Vesia
Jack Dreyer
Anthony Banda
Emmet Sheehan
Roki Sasaki
Justin Wrobleski
Clayton Kershaw
Ben Casparius

The rotation is basically set with those four, and so is the order after the NLCS, because there’s no reason not to go with Snell, Yamamoto, Glasnow, Ohtani, Snell, Yamamoto, Glasnow/Ohtani/Snell/Kitchen Sink in the World Series. They’re all getting plenty of rest at this point, so that’s moot.

The only possible decision that Dave Roberts alluded to is probably in the pen. While the Blue Jays have a lot of quality bats in their lineup, their very best (Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, Bo Bichette) are all right-handed. Still, they’re surprisingly neutral when it comes to skill as a lineup, except for Guerrero, and the Dodgers are lefty reliever heavy, so it’s within the realm of possibility that they add something like a Will Klein or Edgardo Henriquez about Justin Wrobleski or Tanner Scott.

Still, either of these would be a pretty big gamble if they used them in key spots, so hopefully it remains moot. More likely, Roki, Treinen, Sheehan and even Casparius will be the key matchups against those three elite bats.

The Blue Jays don’t have a lefty starter, but they could do something like utilize Eric Lauer or one of their other lefty relievers as an Opener because Shohei keeps them up at night (valid), so the lineup against an Opener is typically something like that. They moved Dills to the three-hole after Game 1, presumably because they felt more confident that he is healthy.

The main potential pinch-hit matchup I see is if they go left late in the game against Freeman-Smith-Muncy or even just Muncy, at which point you could see Call of Rojas brought in, since both could come out on defense anyway. Other than that, they are quite well aligned to handle any dexterity game.

======

After the violation, the day turned against the Red in the WCS while the pen faltered, both the Phillies in the NLDS and Brewers in the NLCS did a good job limiting the lineup, so luckily the rotation was otherworldly and the pin was bent but not broken. In the World Series against the Blue Jays, their bats will likely put more on the plate, so it looks like the Dodger bats will have to come back to life to carry them in some games, and hopefully they’ll be up for the challenge.
