Portugal will ‘give everything’ to secure World Cup place, says Vitinha – Soccer News

Portugal will not hold back in its bid to secure World Cup qualification as it looks to continue its ‘habit’ of reaching the final, Vitinha says.

A win over Hungary in Lisbon on Tuesday, coupled with Armenia’s failure to beat the Republic of Ireland, would secure Portugal’s place in next year’s tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Portugal have never lost to Hungary in their 15 previous meetings (W11 D4) and have won each of the last four meetings, including a 3-2 win in the reverse fixture in September.

The Selecao, who have won all three of their matches in the top group of Group F so far, have qualified for each of the last six World Cups and reached the quarter-finals in Qatar in 2022.

And Vitinha wants to complete qualifying as early as possible.

Asked at a pre-match press conference whether qualifying for the World Cup was their biggest motivation, Vitinha said: “Without a doubt. We have that firmly in mind.

“We can now secure our place at the World Cup. It has become a habit; we have developed the habit of being there, but it is not easy.”

“And then we can have a quieter training camp in November, even though we always want to win. It’s a great opportunity to secure our qualification, and we will give everything.”
