Do you want to know how difficult it is to scale up battery production as a European OEM in the current climate? Even a brand that is so enormously successful as Porsche, with a proven track record in the transition to the type of EVs that people claim to buy – including the current Macan, but also with the Cayenne and electrified 718 in treatment – apparently cannot hope to generate sufficiently attractive economies to strive for its own dedicated production of battery cells.
We know this because Oliver Blume, the CEO of Porsche, confirmed the same amount on Monday in a statement that was unusually frank about the problem. Although Europe would be to pull its weight in the transition to battery power – fully 57 percent of the models that were delivered there in the first half of 2025, the global quota was made to stagnate with only 36 percent. Porsche suggested that ‘challenging circumstances’ in North America and China were mainly the fault of the deficit and that it would no longer be [be] The pursuit of his own production of battery cells’ as a result.
This of course does not mean that EVs will prevent less prominent in the manufacturer’s line-up, but the long-term plan for the Cellforce group GmbH (effectively the independent battery department of Porsche) to edit a ‘start-up factory’ in Kirchentellinsfurt before he splits at a second location. Given the current shortage in predicted volume, the strategy was no longer considered realistic.
Instead, the reduced footprint of Cellforce will be charged with the research and development of future high -performance batteries and the results back in Powerco – the much larger battery company of the VW Group – as part of the broader investment in EVs and the supply chain that it creates. In the short term, Porsche promised that it would still bring ‘trend -setting technologies in electromobility’ into series production -but also repeated that combustion engines (in addition to hybrid and EV solutions) would remain part of his powertrain mix ‘until well into the 2030s’. New derivatives of the 911 using the same V4Smart booster cells as the GTs are apparently prepared for the impending launch.
