Topline

The man fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis on Saturday morning was a U.S. citizen who local authorities said was living in the city, the latest in a series of escalating events linked to a large federal presence in Minnesota.

Key facts

The group of federal agents, shown in a video shared on Facebook, took the man to the ground and began punching him before at least ten shots were fired outside Glam Doll Donuts on the city’s south side, leaving the man limp.

At an afternoon news conference, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the victim was a 37-year-old U.S. citizen who had been shot multiple times.

Earlier on Saturday, Tricia McLaughlin, deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said federal agents “conducted a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an illegal alien wanted for assault,” who she said was armed with a semi-automatic handgun.

The federal agents attempted to disarm the man, but when he “severely resisted,” an officer “fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers” fired defensive shots, killing the man, McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin claimed the victim wanted to “cause maximum damage and slaughter law enforcement,” but O’Hara did not confirm those details in his comments Saturday afternoon, saying the victim was a legal gun owner who had a permit to carry the weapon.

“Unlawful Assembly” Declared in Minneapolis

O’Hara described “an incredibly volatile scene in south Minneapolis right now” as authorities deployed tear gas and other deterrents Saturday in an effort to disperse a growing crowd of protesters after the shooting. The police chief said local authorities “issued multiple warnings” for the crowd to disperse. KARE reported that federal authorities were to stake chemical irritants towards hundreds of protesters who had gathered in the area, along with the city Minneapolis urging residents to “remain calm and avoid the immediate area.”

The shooting last involved federal agents in Minnesota

The shooting comes weeks after Renee Good was fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis, sparking nationwide protests and renewed calls to abolish ICE. A week after Good was killed, a Venezuelan man was shot in the leg in Minneapolis after federal officials said he attacked an officer.

Crucial quote

“How many more residents and Americans have to die or be seriously injured before this operation can end?” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said this during a press conference this afternoon. “How many more lives must be lost before this administration realizes that a political and partisan narrative is not that important to American values?”

Minnesota Democrats make demands on Trump

Senator Amy KlobucharD-Minn., who earlier this week filed paperwork to run for governor of Minnesota, said she is gathering information about Saturday’s shooting but appealed to federal authorities: “To the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress who have stood still: Get ICE out of our state NOW.” Gov. Tim Walz made similar comments about

Recording follows massive march in Minneapolis
