In the light of the recent British transfer from Alexander Isak to Liverpool after his strike, there is a need to investigate more of such cases of players who have forced a transfer in recent times or move to a large club.
1. Alexander Isak (Newcastle to Liverpool)
Isak initially did not make his wish clear what he wanted in the transfer. However, after Liverpool had achieved a movement for Hugo Etikite, ISAK clearly made his wish to moving to Liverpool. This encouraged Liverpool to make an offer to Newcastle. However, Newcastle, however, rejected various bids for Isak from Liverpool, and this frustrated the Swedish striker.
What would he do afterwards? The Swedish striker refused to appear before the preseason and eventually went on Instagram to make a statement about the ‘broken promises’ of Newcastle. Long story short, on Deadline Day Newcastle finally accepted the record offer of £ 125 million from Liverpool for Isak, and the player insured his dream movement.
2. Yoane Wissa (Brentford to Newcastle)
The case is very similar to Yoane Wissa. After scoring 20 Premier League goals for Brentford last season, Wissa was hungry to a switch to a larger club. Just like Newcastle, Brentford has rejected many offers for Wissa, much to the frustration of the striker.
Wissa went on Instagram, just like Isak, to make a statement of broken promises, and he refused to appear before the preseason.
In the end, Brentford Wissa sold £ 55 million to Newcastle. The player finally got his wish.
3. Viktor -Wortel (Sporty CP to Arsenal)
Gyökeres scored at a ridiculous speed at the sport. He scored 97 goals and had 26 assists in 102 games. In his more than two seasons in the club, he helped the club to win two league titles.
As a result of his success, Gyökkeres reportedly had a men’s agreement to allow him to move to a larger club for less than his supposed release clause from € 100 million.
Arsenal then came to beat, but Sporting was on the ‘official’ € 100 million release clause. This frustrated Viktor Gyökeres, and he went on strike and said he would never play for sport again.
In the end, Sporting accepted the € 63 million offer from Arsenal and the player secured his dream movement.
4. Mozes Caicedo (Brighton to Chelsea)
The Moisés Caicedo Saga also dragged on for weeks. Brighton was initially detained and claimed that the Ecuadorian was not for sale. But Caicedo had other ideas. After a brilliant season in Brighton’s midfield, Chelsea was desperate to get him, and the player himself was desperate to leave.
Caicedo even became public with messages on social media and begged Brighton to let him continue. This did not go well at the club, and Brighton sent him away from the training field for a few weeks. The impasse only fueled the determination of Chelsea and in the end the London Club came back with a record offer of £ 115 million in August 2023. Brighton had no choice but to accept, and Caicedo finally got his big move.
5. Matheus Nunes (Wolves to Manchester City)
When Manchester City came to call, Matheus Nunes knew he couldn’t leave it. However, wolves were reluctant to lose their star player. But how would nunes react? Well, he responded in the worst possible way by refusing to appear before training. The player’s camp made it clear that he would not play for Wolves again until the deal was sorted.
It was an ugly impasse. Wolves fans felt betrayed and the club publicly criticized his behavior. But Nunes would not admit. In the end City got their husband for 53m.
6. Dimitri Payet (West Ham to Marseille, 2017)
Fans of West Ham worshiped Payet for his magic on the ball. The man was ridiculously talented. In January 2017, however, Payet was elsewhere. He informed the manager and the board that he wanted to return to Marseille, whatever happens. Payet then shocked the club by refusing to play.
Because he was their starman, West Ham tried to hold. But Payet’s constant refusal to train or play created created a poisonous atmosphere around the team. In the end, West Ham stuck and sold him back to Marseille for £ 25 million. For the Hamers it was the end of a love affair. For Payet it was proof of how powerful the will of a player can be, as can be seen in so many cases that have been discussed above.
7. Harry Kane (Tottenham to Bayern Munich)
To be honest, the situation of Harry Kane was somewhat different, but still important to discuss. Kane had long suggested that he wanted trophies, and when large clubs circled, he tried to sell traces. He delayed his return to the preseason training, which was seen as a clear or subtle protest against Daniel Levy and the refusal of the club to negotiate with Bayern Munich.
The Saga became Headline News and Spurs fans were divided. Some were sympathetic and others were furious.
In 2023 Kane eventually became the most expensive signature in the history of Bundesliga and it cost no less than € 110 million.
8. Carlos Tevez (Manchester City, 2011)
The Fall -Out from Tevez with Manchester City was one of the most dramatic of the era. During a Champions League match, Tevez refused to warm up when he was called as a replacement by Roberto Mancini. From that moment the relationship between Tevez and City went off.
He went AWOL for months. Tevez went back to Argentina instead of returning to the training in City. Man City eventually had to accept that the striker would never play for them again under the same conditions. Although he returned briefly, writing was on the wall and Tevez finally left for Juventus.
The Tevez strike remains one of the most notorious history of the Premier League.
9. William Gallas (Chelsea to Arsenal, 2006)
This still feels the most incredible of all cases. Allegedly, Gallas threatened to score his own goal if Chelsea forced him to play when he wanted to leave. He refused to train and made life so difficult that Chelsea was supported in a corner.
He eventually got his wish. Gallas moved to Arsenal in a transfer that the Premier League shocked. The story of the Gallas is one of the most controversial characters of that time.
10. Luka Modric (Tottenham to Real Madrid)
By 2012, Luka Modrić Tottenham had outgrown. Real Madrid wanted him, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was notoriously tough in negotiations. Modrić decided to take matters into his own hands. He refused to participate in the Spurs during their pre -season tour and even skipped training sessions, making his attitude crystal clear.
In the end, Spurs accepted Real Madrid’s range of approximately £ 31 million and the player was able to secure his dream movement.
11. Ousmane Dembélé (Boriussia Dortmund to Barcelona)
The Dembélé strike near Dortmund was one of the most dramatic and another example of players who have forced a transfer in recent years. After Barcelona Neymar lost to PSG, they scored Dembélé their top goal. Dortmund, however, did not want to sell their star tent.
How would Dembélé respond? He completely skipped the training and went completely AWOL. Dortmund had no choice but to suspend him, and it became clear that the relationship was irreparable. Barcelona returned with a monster offer of € 105 million. And Dortmund finally admitted it.
12. Dani Alves (Sevilla to Barcelona)
Dani Alves was already one of the best full-backs in Europe when Barcelona came to call. Seville initially refused to let him go, especially because he was crucial for their team. But Alves would not take no as an answer.
He refused to play in Champions League qualifications and he effectively removed from selection for a long period. Seville eventually agreed to sell him for £ 23.5 million. For Barcelona it turned out to be one of the best signing sessions in their history, but for Sevilla forced the way Alves forced the movement a sour note.
13. Riyad Mahrez (Leicester to Manchester City)
Riyad Mahrez had given Leicester everything, including playing a key role in their miraculous Premier League title in 2012. But when Manchester City came to be correct, he decided it was time to continue. Leicester rejected the first bids of City, which led to the frustration of Mahrez.
Mahrez missed training sessions and even competitions. In fact, it was a long -term impasse, where Leicester refused to negotiate with City. But in the end Mahrez got his way. City paid no less than £ 60 million and Mahrez finally got his wish.
Conclusion
These examples of players who have forced a transfer movement are case studies who are clear indications that players sometimes have to force their employers to protect their dream movement. But is it good to get it done this way? Should clubs stand in the way who want to leave? Is it rather honest for clubs to also throw players to the reserve if they are no longer needed?
