Pionk remembers Jets Salomonsson from Moose every day

The Winnipeg Jets announced this morning that the team has recalled defenseman Elias Salomonsson from the Manitoba Moose, with Neal Pionk listed as day-to-day. Despite the injury, Pionk will still travel with the Jets on their upcoming five-game road trip.

#NHLJets head coach Scott Arniel says Neal Pionk is there every day and travels. He adds, “It appears” Elias Salomonsson will make his NHL debut during the road trip.

Pionk played just over two minutes in Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Wild before leaving with what appeared to be a leg or groin problem. He did not return and Jets PR later confirmed it was a lower body injury. Pionk skated alone today and appeared to be moving well, but he will continue to do so on a day-to-day basis as the team monitors how he feels ahead of tomorrow’s game in Washington.

Since the Jets were on the road for the next ten days, reinforcements were necessary. Winnipeg opted to draft Salomonsson from the Moose, and the 21-year-old is expected to make his NHL debut tomorrow against the Capitals.

During today’s training, the Swedish defender skated next to Dylan Samberg in the second pair. Logan Stanley and Colin Miller formed the third duo, with Luke Schenn coming on as an extra defender.

Pionk, 30, has played 21 games this season, scoring one goal and four assists for five points.

Salomonsson has appeared in 17 games with the Moose this year. While he is still searching for his first AHL goal of the season, he has registered six assists.

You can also expect goaltender Thomas Milic, who currently backs up Eric Comrie, to make his NHL debut sometime during this road trip. With the Jets scheduled for back-to-back Friday at Carolina and Saturday at Nashville, it’s likely Milic will get his first NHL start against the Predators.
