The Golden Eagles Report: Marquette is already coming off its first losing season in conference play since 2021. That was also the last season before Shaka Smart took over. All the talk has been about Smart’s policy on transfers and it seems like this will have to change in the future. Speaking of moving forward, before Smart finds a transfer in the portal, he will have to do everything he can to ensure that freshman Nigel James Jr. returns to Milwaukee for another season. James was the biggest bright spot of the season in leading the team with 16.1 ppg and 4.9 apg. James is second in the conference in scoring in league games.
Oh, just ending another long losing streak and potentially avoiding last place in the Big East, that’s all.
In their first meeting, Georgetown ended an eight-game losing streak against Marquette. With a win tonight, the Hoyas can end an eight-game home losing streak against Marquette and record their second-ever winning season over the Golden Eagles (2015). Georgetown last scored a home win over Marquette on Feb. 11, 2017. It was the last win for former coach John Thompson III before the Hoyas finished that season with a six-game deficit.
Cooley Comments: After the last two losses, Ed Cooley had mentioned that both John Thompson Jr. like James Naismith would be turning in their graves. Cooley made the comment about Thompson after a 93-89 loss to Butler on Feb. 18 in which no real defense was played. Three days later, after both teams shot less than 30% from the field in the 51-47 loss of Georgetown at Seton Hall, Cooley brought up basketball inventory. If Cooley continues to roll over in their graves for a third straight game, I’m not sure who he could be referring to, but Dave Gavitt and Al Maguire seem like good guesses.
