Oscar Piastri says that obeying team orders from McLaren is important for the future success of the team and protects some of the staff that the drivers offer the racing-winning machines.
McLaren told Piastri to move for Lando Norris after a slow pit stop Norris cost a position to his teammate late in the Italian Grand Prix. The call was designed to keep the chivers -championship fight between the two as honest as possible, whereby McLaren regards the slow stop to be out of the hands of both drivers, and Piastri says he sees a greater image when respecting such a request.
“We often said that we don’t just want the chance of success for this year,” said Piastri. “There is a major change in regulation next year – we don’t know how competitive we will be and we don’t know how competitive someone is going to be.
“In the end we want to win the best chance to win championships as long as we are Formula 1 drivers, and we are both at McLaren for a long time. The people around us who give us this opportunity is a very important thing. It’s simple enough to put yourself in second place.
“If we fought the entire race very well, then it is slightly different, but Lando was the entire race for a few seconds, so there is no worries about that.
“Again, we don’t just want that this year will fight for a championship; we want to protect it for as long as possible, including the people who do the pit stops – it’s not very nice feeling [making a mistake]I would imagine it. It is important to protect all the people we have, because that is what we hope for a championship for the coming years. “
Norris supported Piastri’s position and said that the work that was done in the driver’s relationship on this point was designed to try to provide the best basis for long -term success.
“The team is the priority,” said Norris. “The team is number one, then the drivers are second. That’s how it works. Normally, when you see it [drivers] Who do not have enough respect for the team and the opportunities that the team gives, it normally doesn’t last long.
“You see that with many other teams, whether it has been Red Bull, Ferrari or Mercedes. We want to try to be a longer period in this position than what they have been at the top. Still early days – it’s only our second year of fighting for victories.
“But as Oscar said, the team gives us these opportunities. Without the team we just fight for the tenth, and none of us want that. So the moral, the spirit of the team, is priority, and we are below.”
