These Phillies podcasters were stunned to find out that Bo Bichette had agreed to a deal with the Mets on Friday.
PHLY Sports’ Jamie Lynch and Tyler Zulli were filming their podcast — analyzing Bichette’s potential suitors in free agency — when one of their staffers interrupted them with news of the infielder’s three-year, $126 million contract with the Mets, leaving the two in absolute shock.
After some shouting followed by a brief silence, Lynch then asked where Bichette would play in the Mets’ infield.
“Well, they have [Marcus] seeds, [Francisco] Lindor, and [Mark] Vientos,” Lynch said, referring to the Mets’ fairly full infield for next year.
Lynch and Zulli then broke some more silence by simultaneously shouting “what” into the cameras.
Zulli then speculated on where the Mets might place Bichette next season, saying he could play “a little bit of everywhere.”
“He’s not going to DH,” Zulli said. “I imagine he’ll play a little bit everywhere?”
According to The Post’s Jon Heyman, the 27-year-old Bichette is expected to play third base in Queens — despite never playing that position in professional baseball.
PHLY Sports podcasters were likely shocked by the deal as well, as the Phillies were initially one of the favorites to land Bichette in free agency.
Heyman reported earlier in January that it “feels like there is a strong mutual interest” between the two parties after they met to discuss a potential contract.
Additional, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports this that the “Phillies are the overwhelming favorites to sign the two-time All-Star,” while also stating that the “Yankees and Mets will now be in a bidding war for outfielder Cody Bellinger.”
Philadelphia quickly pivoted after striking out Bichette, but re-signed three-time All-Star catcher JT Realmuto to a three-year, $45 million deal on Friday.
