With another month of the regular season baseball, some Award races from MLB have already been resolved.
Once a fiercely disputed fight, Pittsburgh Pirates Ace Paul Skenes almost claimed the NL CY Young Award. In the meantime, Athletics has turned first baseman Nick Kurtz a scorching summer into an insurmountable lead for Al Rookie of the year. SKENES currently has -10,000 opportunities to win its first Cy Young, while Kurtz is an almost -guarantee that Roty claims with -20,000 opportunities, per Fanduel.
However, one player has proven that he does not care about the opportunities.
Philadelphia Phillies DH Kyle Schwarber, a competition for NL MVP and has a career season in his fourth Go-Round in Philly. The triple All-Star has consistently illuminated the scoreboard as a Phillie and launches at least 38 homers in each of the last four seasons. But this year it has been even better for the two-time World Series champion.
Despite the pacing of the MLB in RBIs and ranking near the top of the competition in Homers, Schwarber has only been a serious competition to win MVP for a short period. The return of Shohei Ohtani to a two-way power patter has closed every argument against him and won his fourth MVP prize.
Only a week ago had the five -time All -Star -20,000 chances for NL MVP while Schwarber was a distant second on +1.700. But the performance of the 32-year-old on Thursday evening may have unilaterally pulled him in the race.
Schwarber became the third player this season, but only the 21st in the MLB history, to launch four gayers in the same match in a 19-4 walloping of the Atlanta Braves.
With this four-home run, nine-rbi master class, Schwarber has suddenly found himself as the only talent that Ohtani can really challenge in 2025. The MVP opportunities of the experienced Slugger have been shot up to +500, while the run-away benefit of Ohtani has shrunk to just -900.
Schwarber is only one long ball shy for the Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners for the MLB lead. He now also has 11 more RBIs than any other player in baseball. With an OBP of .370 it is difficult to say that someone has been on the record more effectively this season than Schwarber.
Schwarber has only continued to improve with age. In what can go very well as his best season in the MLB, he has already set career heights across the board.
A little more magic is needed for Schwarber to catch up on Ohtani as the NL MVP favorite. But the fact that he was able to make the race a real competition is in itself a victory.
