Liv Michigan, the team championship event 2025, started on Friday and the fireworks started early. Twelve teams started the day in the running, but only six survived to keep their title hopes alive.
While the top two teams continued safely, the third ranked team suffered a stabbing upset for the Hyflyers team of Phil Mickelson.
This is what you need to know.
Mickelson wins to continue to Liv Half -finals
Mickelson had something of a personal Renaissance on the course this season. He collected three top 10s and finished 24th in the individual classification.
But the Hyflyers team of Mickelson is all the way down in the 10th that the Liv Michigan team championship entered. As a result, they were forced to compete against the Fireballs GC, ranked no. 3, with former Masters champion Sergio Garcia.
But the upset was rarely in question on Friday in the Cardinal in St. John’s. Hyflers -Teammates Brendan Steele and Andy Ogletree defeated Fireballs players Garcia and Josele Ballester 1 to secure the first point of the day.
Cameron Tringale of the Hyflyers defeated Fireballs’ Abraham Ancer 3 and 1 for a second point.
The last singles match put Mickelson against David Puig. The two players closed all day, with Puig a first lead, before Mickelson won two holes to turn the script.
It was all square for a few holes before Mickelson won on the 2nd and 4th holes (their 11th and 13th holes of the game) to go up 2. But Puig pushed back and left a birdie on the par-4 7th to make it all square.
It remained so until the first extra hole, when Mickelson the Par-4 10th Bird to win and achieve a 3-0 win over the Fireballs GC, so that they were hit out of battle to win the championship.
Liv Team Championship Semifinals Preview
