Petr Yan does not entertain the idea of a confrontation with Umar Nurmagomedov.
Yan participated in the Co-Main event of UFC Abu Dhabi last Saturday. He went one-on-one with Marcus Mcghee in a fight that many considered a potential fall. The match went the distance and Yan finally scored the unanimous decision victory. With the victory, “No Mercy” hopes to secure another Bantamweight title fight.
A competition on which Yan is not focused is a collision with the No. 2-ranked Bantamweight Nurmagomedov. During the UFC Abu Dhabi Post-Fight Press Conference, Yan explained why that fight does not appeal to him (H/T Inappropriate).
“At the moment I am not interested in fighting Umar in November in Qatar,” said Yan. “I was offered a fight against him in Baku, Azerbaijan. I accepted it; they couldn’t accept it. Then I asked for July, they couldn’t make it either. At the moment I am only focused on a title shot.”
UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov recently teased that Umar’s next fight will be a five -round main event. If Yan gets his way, he will not be the next dance partner of Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov not only suffered the first loss of his Pro MMA career to Merab Dvalishvili, but he also had to recover from a hand injury. At the moment it is unknown who will be Nurmagomedov’s opponent.
In the next UFC Bantamweight Title Fight, Champion Dvalishvili will put its gold at the game against Cory Sandhagen on UFC 320 on October 4. Yan hopes to serve as the back -up hunter. He also praised both Dvalishvili and Sandhagen when he was asked who he would rather fight for the title.
Yan admitted that he would like to stand against Dvalishvili again to see how he can adapt in a rematch. In 2023, Dvalishvili defeated Yan via a unanimous decision. It was the last time that Yan was defeated.
