Yanxuan Peng maintains ahead, wins 34th Gam Women’s Championship

Rochester-Yanxuan Peng from China, a 16-year-old GAM member who visits Michigan this summer to explore the golf opportunities of the university, won the 34th Gam Women’s Championship presented on Tuesday by Carl’s Golfland in Oakland University Golf & Learning Center.

She followed her opening 68 from Monday with a 1st 71 on the Katke-Cousins course for 139 and won with five shots.

Peng, who was planning to celebrate during dinner with her mother, said that the victory was her biggest in the US.

“It means a lot to me,” she said. “I am very happy and excited. It is a tough course. It has a very large slope and hard greens.”

Grace Slocum from Traverse City, who will become a member of the Golf Team of the University of Wisconsin this fall, shot 69 for 144 and finished second.

Kate Brody van Grand Blanc, who is already in the team in Wisconsin and won the Illinois Women’s Open Championship last week, shot 72 for 146 and was in third place with Laura Bavaird from Trenton, the Gam Women’s mid-amateur Champion earlier this summer, which also closed with a 72.

Rachael Krieger van Commerce Township and Grand Valley State University Schoten 75 for 147 and fifth place.

Macie Elzinga from Byron Center and Bowling Green State University, the recent amateur champion Michigan, was the following on 148 after a 79 and two -time defender Bridget Boczar by Canton and Baylor University Schoten 73 for 149.

Peng, who had three birdies and two bogeys in her round, knew she was probably in charge because her play partners were too much for the round.

“I see a leaderboard at the age of 12, so I know it’s like I have five battle training,” she said.

She said her next tournament in China will be at home when she represents her hometown of Chongqing in a national event.

“I think it’s the biggest tournament in China,” she said.

Slocum said that a second place will give her momentum when she goes to Wisconsin for university wave.

“I am excited and ready to go to Wisconsin,” she said. “I felt pretty good all day today. I wish I still had a few puts that feel in it, but in general I am not angry with photographing 69.”

The highlight of her round came to Hole 14, where she held a approach for an eagle 2.

“I had 77 meters left and I spoke with my Caddy Josh and said I had so many opportunities, I just have to make one,” she said. “He was something like that, oh, it’s going to happen. And then I hit the shot and it immediately jumped.”
