Penang’s Mutiara Line LRT will continue construction through Chinese New Year in February and Hari Raya Aidilfitri in March. Named reports, with State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Commission chairman Zairil Khir Johari saying there can be no delays as a very tight timetable is needed to complete the project by December 2031.
“Furthermore, any delay in achieving the project completion target will attract a penalty clause as stipulated in the contract. However, the implementation of the traffic management plan (TMP) during the festive season will be managed in a manner that does not disrupt the flow of traffic or endanger the safety of road users, especially with the expected increase in the number of vehicles,” he said during the Penang State Assembly meeting yesterday.
He was responding to Air Putih MP Lim Guan Eng, who asked about the expected cost of the project, the start date of construction and whether work would be postponed until after Aidilfitri. According to SRS Consortium – the contractor for the Civil Main Contractor Package 1 (CMC1) – Jalan Magazine, the intersection in front of Sunny Point in Batu Uban and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah in the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone are the locations expected to be most affected by construction works.
Zairil said the Penang Island Municipal Council (MBPP) has instructed MRT Corp to prepare a detailed TMP for each station location from George Town to Permatang Damar Laut. This TMP, which was approved by local authorities on October 14, will be implemented in phases depending on location.
“Mitigation measures will be implemented by MRT Corp to minimize the impact on existing traffic, ensure smooth vehicle movement and improve traffic flow efficiency in key areas during the construction period of the Mutiara Line LRT,” he said, adding that MRT Corp will also provide alternative routes and traffic diversions as part of the approved TMP, which will be reviewed and refined monthly for future planning.
The 29.5km Mutiara Line LRT, first mooted in 2015, will connect Penang Island and the mainland through 21 stations. The main alignment plan includes the route from the Penang South Reclamation area to Penang Sentral and Komtar station in George Town.
