We all know that the pelicans have been malignant for their design night trade that they brought them Derik Queen, but the first round pick, unprotected, sacrificed to do this. Part of that criticism is justified, some of them a bit unfair – it is not like the pelicans who have given up a choice for Nothing. They removed Derik Queen! The unknown of one future Pick will always be more attractive than a real player, who is stupid, and Queen should be an exciting prospect to see grow, but I wander.
However, where trade loses me, is the pelicans who actually send mixed signals in the process. Because playing Jeremiah fears and Derik Queen-Starter (or near starter) minutes, as they seem to go on their way, a sign is that this team does not want to win at a high level this season. That is fine in a vacuum, but 19 and 20-year-olds throw in the fire “works” if a team can do this, knowing that if things go well, they have young stars, and if things don’t go well, they get closer to a high draw pick.
The latter is no longer the case in Nola, which means that the pelicans have unfairly high expectations for their rookies and this team in general, or … Troy Weaver, Joe Dumars and Gayle Bensonpre just didn’t think before this deal was closed. Or both. It can always be both.
A 19-year-old who runs the attack, as it seems that fears are in line, does not lead to victories. And that is not at all the fault of the fears it is just almost impossible to influence the game at a high level in the year one as a primary ball handler.
The Pelicans may have unfair expectations for Jeremiah fears in year one
Look at the contemporaries of Fears: Tyrese Maxey on average 8.0 points are Rookie season. Jalen Brunson on average 9.3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander On average 10.8, De’aaron Fox 11.6, Jamal Murray 9.9. Darius Garland had one of the worst rookie seasons in the recent NBA history!
Of course there are a few exceptions to the Kyrie Irving Regel-Alles star in his first year and Trae Young immediately put 19 & 8 on the bat but more often than not, young guards take the time to get used to the speed of the NBA. It would be great if fears in Kyrie Irving … but the efforts of his Rookie year is essentially, Be now in Kyrie Irving or our front office will look really bad Doesn’t seem fair.
And again, I don’t really hate to put the ball in the hands of fears and see what he can do. But if that is the plan, then giving up the first Rounder of next year, completely unprotected, will not be on that plan at all, unless the team expects fears that immediately contrary to an All-Star spot. And if that is the case, we have to have a much larger conversation about how this Front Office approaches the development of players.
