Paytm allows NRIs to use UPI payments through international mobile no

Paytm has launched a service that allows non-resident Indians from 12 countries to make UPI payments in India using their international mobile numbers, the company announced today. This feature eliminates the need for a local Indian SIM card and works with NRE or NRO bank accounts.

NRIs can now use the Paytm app to send money, pay merchants via QR codes and shop on Indian platforms without currency conversions or international payment gateways.

The service enables instant transfers to UPI IDs or mobile numbers, bypassing traditional transfer delays and exchange fees.

The National Payments Corporation of India operates the service, which is available to Indians living in Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, US, Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK, France and Malaysia. The feature is currently in beta testing and will be rolled out to all eligible users in the coming days.

Paytm’s platform offers additional features including downloadable UPI statements in PDF or Excel format, automatic expense categorization, payment hiding options and consolidated balance display of linked bank accounts. The app also includes an AI-generated spend history feature called Paytm Playback.

To use the service, NRIs need to download the Paytm app, log in with their international number, verify via SMS and link their bank account. The company is positioning this launch as part of its broader financial inclusion strategy, aimed at keeping Indians globally connected to the Indian digital payments ecosystem.

Shares of One 97 Communications Limited ended today on the NSE at ₹1,305.60, up ₹18.60 or 1.45 percent.
