Paul Pierce blames ‘falling asleep’ in traffic after DUI arrest

From ‘The Truth’ to ‘old’ and ‘tired’.

Paul Pierce attributed his Tuesday arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence to falling asleep at the wheel when the 47-year-old needed to close his eyes.

Pierce included a photo of the traffic at a standstill with his post, although he did not mention the allegations that he was under the influence.

“Imagine standing in stationary traffic for 45 minutes and falling asleep 🤦🏾‍♂️ I took this photo that night because I have never stood in stationary traffic for so long,” Pierce posted on Threads on Thursday. “I’m old, I’m tired and I fell asleep 🤷🏾‍♂️You’re all doing well, thanks for the love.”

Police arrested Pierce late Tuesday in California after finding him asleep in his SUV on the 101 Freeway at 10:30 p.m. the California Highway Patrol said in a statement as relayed by NBC4.

Officers had responded to a multi-car accident that resulted in lane closures, but they reportedly noticed a Range Rover that had stopped moving after the lanes reopened.

They arrested Pierce on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, and Pierce’s case will be reviewed by the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office.

Pierce has reportedly since been cited and released.

“As officers approached, they found the driver, later identified as Paul Pierce, asleep behind the wheel,” the California Highway Patrol said in their statement, according to NBC.

“Officers noted signs of alcohol abuse and conducted a DUI investigation.”

A member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, Pierce spent 19 seasons in the NBA, playing primarily for the Celtics from 1998 to 2013 before making his ill-fated move to the Nets.

The Pierce-Kevin Garnett-Deron Williams-Joe Johnson-Brook Lopez Nets are considered an all-time NBA failure, losing in five games in the second round of the playoffs before falling apart.
