After finishing second in two races in the stakes company Blue Devil Racing Stable’s Patricia Ann He looks set to finish one better on Sunday in the $150,000 Garland of Roses, a six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares 3 years and older, at Aqueduct Racetrack.
The four-year-old Enticed bay, trained by Carlos Martin, was last seen finishing 1 1/4 seconds Weigh the risks in the seven-furlong Listed Pumpkin Pie on November 8, where she finished second under returning rider Kendrick Carmouche and gave a chase when she was eliminated in the lane by the winner. The effort was rewarded with an 87 Beyer Speed Figure.
“She’s in such good shape and she’s become a consistent sprinter,” Martin said. “She was good last time and I’m glad Kendrick put her in the race. I was pretty confident around the turn, and she fought bravely until the last sixteenth of a mile and Weigh the Risks was great that day. She’s great.” [Patricia Ann] I’ve been dealing with some tough fillies lately who are stepping up for the bridesmaid, so I’m excited about this opportunity and hopefully we can make her a stakes winner.”
Two starts ago, Patricia Ann took the black type with a similar second place to R Disaster in the 6 1/2-furlong Grade 2 Gallant Bloom on September 27 here. Her last two attempts at six furlongs produced off-the-board finishes on a sloppy and closed main track at Saratoga Race Course in August and on firm grass here in September, but her last attempt at the distance on a fast track resulted in a score of 3 3/4 lengths here last November. The win was the first of consecutive scores at allowance level, ahead of a six-month postponement from January to July.
“I think our filly still has some room for improvement,” Martin said. “She was gone for a while, she came back and didn’t get anything out of the slop race at Saratoga, and you can throw away the grass race. We’ve caught up a little bit and I think we got her back to her best shape with her last two efforts.”
Patricia Ann, named after Martin’s late sister-in-law, was purchased for $20,000 at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale and is out of the unraced Rahy mare Soother. She has earned $270,525 via an 11-3-4-0 record.
“She’s always been a big, beautiful filly, and she really fits that mold,” Martin said. “Over the past six to eight weeks she has really improved physically, getting bigger and stronger. We bought her as a yearling in honor of my late sister-in-law, Patricia Wagner. It was a godsend to have her. She has made us proud, and I am sure Patricia is in heaven smiling at her namesake. It has been a great story for us and I would love to make her a stakes winner.”
Carmouche returns to the irons from post 2.
Mark Stanley was bred from New York Difficult mood [post 7, Manny Franco] returns to dirt after two attempts on synthetics, including her first placing when she placed third in the 6 1/2-furlong Grade 2 Presque Isle Downs Masters on the namesake course on September 19.
The four-year-old Into Mischief Bay, trained by Jeremiah Englehart, comes in from an even seventh in the seven-furlong Grade 3 Bessarabian on November 8 at Woodbine Racetrack, where she rode a rival at the start and held steady at three-eighths. She tried to rally again but ran out of time and finished four lengths behind the victorious Pondering.
Bred by Sequel Thoroughbreds and Lakland Farm, Tricky Temper’s last six-furlong start on dirt was an optional three-length coup against open company at the Spa in August. She boasts a pair of state wins at the distance on Sunday after taking the Key Cents by the neck here as a juvenile, and Saratoga’s Union Avenue last August, the latter of which produced a best 91 Beyer Speed Figure.

Gimma in September, the mile-and-a-half Maid of the Mist in October and the six-furlong Key Cents in November, with an 11-month lead. This spring she finished third in two other stakes, including the Grade 2 Beaumont over a sloppy and paved base at Keeneland. She makes her ninth start of this campaign and comes into the Pumpkin Pie from a distant seventh place.
