Randy Vasquez started on the hill for the San Diego Padres and worked three scoreless innings to start the game. He came to the hill in the first half of the fourth inning with a 4-0 lead, but the St. Louis Cardinals scored four points on four hits, including a three-run home run by making Pedro pages that St. Louis helped to make the score 4-4 after the top half of the fourth.
The cardinals added four more points in two of the next five innings to achieve an 8-4 victory on the Padres in Petco Park, Saturday.
Vasquez was able to get out of the fourth and returned to the hill in the first half of the fifth inning. He allowed a lead -off single to Ivan Herrera and was replaced on the hill by Jeremiah Estrada. He took a walk to Alec Burleson, but let Willson Contreras search the first in the inning. Estrada then hit Lars Nootbaar, but with two on and two out, Masyn Winn hit a line ride to the left that came along the line and Herrera and Burleson could score to give St. Louis a 6-4 lead.
The last line of Vasquez was four innings with five points allowed on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
The cardinals added two runs in the top of the ninth inning of Padres Reliever Yuki Matsui. He allowed a singles back-to-back and hit Herrera to load the bases. Burleson hit a single to score Victor Scott II to make the score 7-4. The bases remained loaded. With one out, contreras made a sacrificial fly to score Brendan Donovan to make the score 8-4.
San Diego added a point in the second half of the ninth inning when Freddy Fermin hit an RBI single to the right field that Jose Iglesias scored, who started the inning with a walk to make the score, 8-5.
De Padres started and scored four points in the first three innings. One of those runs came on a triple along the right field line of Ramon Laureano, allowing Xander Bogaerts to score from the first base to place San Diego for 2-0.
Jake Cronenworth followed Laureano and was hit by a throw to put runners on the corners. Fermin suggested that to come up with a runner in scoring position and one. He cut a ball on the right side of the Infield and Laureano scored from third place in an RBI groundout to set up the Padres 3-0 after the second inning.
Jackson Merrill added the fourth run in front of the Padres in the second half of the third inning when he delivered a solo-home run to midfield who gave the Padres a 4-0 lead on the way to the top of the fourth.
San Diego concludes the series with St. Louis, sub day at 1:10 pm
