Elias Diaz postponed a ball in the left field with two in the bottom of the ninth inning so that Jose Iglesias could score from the second base to give the San Diego Padres a 7-6 walk-off victory over the New York Mets in Petco Park, Monday.
Diaz was in De Graaf 1-2 against Mets-Reliever Gregory Soto, but he was able to lift a ball over the infield and to drop the outfielders in New York to give San Diego the victory.
Padres closer to Robert Suarez came out of the Bullpen to take his position on the hill in the top of the ninth inning with San Diego holding a 6-5 lead. Suarez wanted to win the Padres, but instead he allowed a solo-home run to Ronny Mauricio so that the Mets could bind the game, 6-6.
It would be understandable if Padres fans, and even Suarez himself, did not think he would appear in the game. The Mets jumped out to a 5-1 lead after a four-run top of the fifth inning.
San Diego, however, responded in the bottom of the fifth and scored five points to take a lead of one run, 6-5.
Fernando Tatis Jr. Districted the inning with a double and was followed by Luis Arraez, who hit a two-run home run to the right field that hit the fault post. The two Runshot made the score 5-3.
Manny Machado hit a single before Jackson Merrill came out for the first from the bottom of the fifth inning. Xander Bogaerts doubled to put runners on the second and third. Gavin sheets turned out for the second from the inning. Jake Cronenworth made the score 5-4 with an RBI single, leaving runners on the corners.
Bryce Johnson hit the right side of the Infield, allowing Bogaerts to score and brought Cronenworth to the third, making the score 5-5. The draw was short-lived because of a single left by Diaz that Cronenworth scored and gave San Diego a 6-5 lead.
Padres -Starter Dylan Stlaat had a tough night. He not only allowed five points, including a Mark Vientos Grand Slam in the first half of the fifth inning, he was also hit by a hard ground ball back to the hill by Francisco Lindor on the back of the head.
Cease would have allowed two home runs to Vientos in back-to-back plate performances, but Tatis Jr. Showed why he is a recipient of Platinum Glove Award. Vientos hit a ball deep in the right field and Tatis Jr. jumped on the wall to remove what a two-run home run would have been, so that the game was bound at 1-1.
Stop took only 4 2/3 innings in his last start in Petco Park before the Trade Deadline. He allowed five points on five hits with five free running and nine strikeouts.
Cese was not the only Padres world who got the benefit of having Tatis Jr. In the right field. Adrian Morejon was on the hill in the first half of the sixth inning and Mauricio hit a flare in the Ondiep right field. Tatis Jr. Could sprint in it and move forward to make the catch.
Eight of the nine batters in the starting setup of the Padres had a hit in the game. The only starter not to get a hit were sheets. Bogaerts had three hits and Arraez, Machado, Johnson and Diaz each recorded two hits in the win.
San Diego continues his series with New York, Tuesday at 6.40 pm
