Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced earlier this month that he expects robotics sales to be a perfect 80% of the value of Tesla. He does not see a limit how many semi-functional optimus robots people will buy, and he expects Tesla to largely run to an AI and Robotics company that does a little car on the side. It is a pity for Musk and his view of Tesla, that the head of Optimus AI of the company has just stopped – even a wage reduction to get out.
Ashish Kumar, former head of AI for Tesla’s Optimus Project, announced his departure from Tesla on Twitter last night. His LinkedIn profile says he is now at Meta, works as a research scientist, and he stated in a follow-up tweet that the decision to leave was not influenced by money-in fact the “”Financial benefit on Tesla was considerably larger. “In general, it is not a great sign in the business world when the most important people for the most important project jump ship of your company without a clear motivation. It points to problems with the project, the company or management.
Not a great sign for Optimus
If a project leader leaves one company for another because of an offer, they cannot refuse – a title bump, pay better, the chance to build their dream project – it is always disappointing for the company they leave, but generally understandable. The departure of Kumar from Tesla does not have that kind of clear motivations, so it is much more suspicious. It points to a kind of problem at Tesla that Kumar tried to get away – maybe MicroManagement from the topOr a concern that the Optimus project does not progress as planned or could not come to get upcoming deadlines.
Optimus is supposed to be the future of Tesla, the only possible way to justify the Cult of Personality Meme. Crucial leaders who leave the project without a clearly better alternative on the horizon is a terrible sign, but it is a sign that the market ignores – at the time of writing, TSLA has risen 1.65% today. Will retail traders ever admit and admit that the value of the company has been completely detached from the underlying finances, or will the valuation of Tesla continue to climb while the company itself continues to rot?
