In one blog post Published Friday, OpenAI shared that ads will appear at the bottom of some ChatGPT responses when a sponsored product or service becomes relevant to the conversation. OpenAI promises that these ads will remain clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT responses, with no impact on the responses themselves.
The company also says it will not serve ads to anyone under the age of 18, nor will ads cover sensitive topics such as medical advice, mental health or politics. OpenAI also claims that it will not sell user conversations or data to advertisers, although it will use conversation context to determine the relevance of ads.
The decision comes after years of advertising resistance from CEO Sam Altman, who previously called advertising in ChatGPT a “last resort” and expressed concerns about user trust.
OpenAI reportedly spent $8.5 billion by 2025 while predicting $13 billion in revenue, CafeTech reports. But only about 5% of ChatGPT’s 800 million weekly users pay for subscriptions. With the introduction of select ads, the company hopes to generate 20% of its revenue from built-in marketing and commissions by 2029.
