Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries dig into their government financing demands, although President Trump canceled a meeting with the two on Tuesday morning. Mr. Trump had said that he would like to ‘like to’ meet the Democrats, although he now says that their demands are ‘unmerus’.
On Friday, Huis Republicans approved their short -term expanding expansion, known as a continuous resolution, which would open the government until November 21. The Senate voted for that bill on the same day, although it did not get the necessary 60 votes to succeed. All Democrats, except Senator John Fetterman, voted to block the bill.
Mr Schumer then set up his counter -offer for a vote – a continuous resolution that made certain health insurance subsidies permanent and limited the President’s authority to unilaterally reduce the financing. Mr. Trump says that he is not willing to entertain such proposals.
“I decided that no meeting with their congress leaders could possibly be productive,” Mr Trump said on Tuesday morning in a long truth of social post. He claimed that Mr Schumer and the minority leader of the house, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, threaten to close the government about things like “$ 1 trillion dollar in new editions to continue free health care for illegal aliens” and have “dead people on … Medicaid”.
The figure of $ 1 trillion to which Mr Trump refers is the almost $ 1 trillion cut Republicans who were made to Medicaid earlier this year in one big beautiful account, who now want to reverse Democrats. The total financing reduction for “illegal aliens” was a policy change in the OBBA. It lowers funds to states that only use state funds for health care for non-citizens. That provision is worth around $ 11 billion in federal financing.
“There are consequences for losing elections, but on the basis of their letter to me the Democrats have not yet discovered that,” Mr Trump wrote. “The Democrats in the congress seem to have completely lost their way. They clearly have no idea what it means to put America in the first place.”
In response, Mr Schumer buried. In a post on X he simply said to the president: “When you’re done raging, we can sit down and discuss healthcare.” When Mr. Schumer was one of the 10 Democrats to give Republicans the voices to move forward in March and to take their expenditure account, after which the bitterness poured out, with his popularity among co -crates.
Mr. Jeffries also said that Democrats would not simply roll and keep the government open without concessions.
“Leader Schumer and I are ready to meet everyone at any time to discuss the issues that are important for the American people and to avoid a painful government closure caused by the Republicans,” said Mr. Jeffries during a press conference in Brooklyn on Tuesday. “Democrats do not support the particial Republican expenditure account because it continues to close the health care of the American people.”
Speaker Mike Johnson supported the president and wrote that Mr Schumer and Democrats asked for a complete withdrawal of the Medicaid reforms that were passed on earlier this year by Republicans in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. “This would be a huge increase in expenditure of $ 1.5 trillion that has been tackled on what a simple 7 -week financing account is.”
In his truth social post, Mr. Trump said he would meet them if they were willing to become ‘serious’.
“I look forward to meeting them when they become serious about the future of our nation. We must keep the government open and keep legislation like real patriots instead of keeping American citizens hostage,” Mr Trump wrote.
“For the leaders of the Democratic Party, the ball is to your court,” he concluded.
Senate Democrats tried to navigate this spending carefully, although it was clear last week when the text of the financing agreement was released that not everyone was on the same page. Various democratic senators who are usually very talkative refused to talk to reporters about what they thought of the bill and how they intended to move forward.
One of the most important bottlenecks for both Democrats and the White House is the use of Mr. Trump by re -saving, a procedural mechanism that the president can use to reduce financing in the party. As soon as the government is financed in a dual vote, the president can easily send a request to the congress that is reduced and that financing requires a simple majority in the Senate.
In a warning sign earlier this month for where this fight went, Senator Chris Coons-a moderate, beloved Democrat who sits in the credit committee-said he would not vote to finance the government unless the issue of the rescue training was tackled.
“We are going to do our best to keep the government open and to pass on credit accounts, but Broadly, President Trump and his allies have already closed the entire parts of the government in the congress,” said Mr. Coons in an interview with NPR. “If they continue with those efforts, I will not support that the government will remain open.”
