Only one gas engine made Ward’s frame and it is a monster

The annual list of the 10 best engines and drive systems from Ward is out, and for the first time in the 31-year history, nine of the winners have been electrified. That leaves only one real blue engine on the list of the winners: the 5.5-liter LT7 V8 with double turbo in the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. The rest of the winners include a combination of electric vehicles made of pure battery, traditional hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

To be eligible for the price, a powertrain must be improved completely new or considerably, or have won the previous year. Most car manufacturers were allowed to submit one powertrain for consideration, while those who sell more than 350,000 units per year could submit two. In addition to the winning ZR1 engine, General Motors also submitted the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with turbo engine to the Buick enclave.

The cheese stands in itself

It should not be surprising that the motorcycle of the ZR1 is the only genuine burning spower in this group of winners. The industry is transferred to its next generation of pure electric power lines, and hybrids have been around for so long now that the technology is generally seen as a non-downside addition to most powertrains. To make this list in 2025, a solo gas engine must be quite special to compete.

The powerful V8 of the ZR1 is absolutely special. This Twin-Turbo-flat-flat-flat DOHC eight-cylinder produces 1,064 hp that peaks at 7,000 rpm and 828 pound-foot torque at 6,000 rpm. That makes it the most powerful V8 engine that Chevrolet, a company that is known for powerful V8s, has ever built.

The bona fide performance of the ZR1 with this engine is downright in world class. Chevy quotes a 0-60 mph time of just 2.3 seconds and a quarter of miles of the Sub-10 seconds of 9.6 seconds by 152 miles per hour. It also succeeded in filling the Nürburgring under 7 minutes, with an official time of 6: 50,763. Finally, the top speed of the ZR1 is a powerful 233 km / h, making it the fastest American production car of all time.

Of course this engine does not only appear in the ZR1. You can get it in a natural sucked taste in the Z06, where it makes 670 hp and 460 pound-foot torque. It also combines well with electrification in the ZR1X, the current king of Corvettes, where its combined power and the electric motor of the front axle is 1,250 hp. Indeed, this 5.5-liter V8 has reach.

We assume that it will not take too long before Ward’s list of the 10 best engines and powertrains consists entirely of electrified vehicles. That can be sooner than we think if GM submits the electrified version of the same engine from the ZR1X for next year’s prices.

Other car manufacturers are also the fault, because the list of pure combustion engines submitted for consideration includes some rather pedestrian choices. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder of the Audi Q5? The 2.5-liter four-cylinder of the Buick Enclave Turbo? Come on.

The only other gas engines that were considered that may have had a chance, were the Turbo 1.6-liter three-cylinder from the Toyota Gr Corolla, which won last year, and the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder of the Twin-Turbo of the RAM RHO, another earlier winner. The Twin-Turbo 3.5-liter V6 in the Nissan Armada Nismo was also considered, who has given some merit in view of the motorcycle in the disappeared, but have not forgotten GT-R. From this couple, however, the power station of the ZR1 is clearly superior.
