TL; DR

  • Samsung is bringing notification summarization and notification prioritization features with One UI 8.5, but we discovered certain limitations.
  • These features only work in the device’s default language, which is likely disappointing for multilingual users.
  • One UI 8.5 may also offer scam detection that analyzes phone calls for fraudulent activity using AI, although this feature may initially be limited to Korea.
Samsung’s upcoming One UI 8.5 update is expected to bring significant reforms to quick settings and notifications on eligible Samsung devices. In addition to the visual changes, the update will likely also bring iOS-like notification summaries and prioritization features. While useful, these features may not be suitable for every user.
From the latest leaked build of One UI 8.5, we get more insight into how these features could work. We’ve spotted some references to these new features in One UI 8.5, and that tells us something about notification summaries. First, it confirms the list of languages supported by notification summaries, including English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Simplified Chinese (Mainland China), Thai, and Vietnamese.

Furthermore, the leaked information indicates that notification summaries will be generated based on the notification history of the last 24 hours. To reassure users about their privacy, the summary will likely be processed locally on the device, rather than sending the information to a cloud-based server.

While local processing sounds reassuring, it would require hardware with enough power to run on-device AI models (most likely multi-modal) to process notifications. That could mean that notification summary may not be available on flagship devices older than the Galaxy S23 series.

Additionally, Samsung will likely limit notification processing and prioritization to the supported languages mentioned above. Furthermore, the features only work with one language at a time, and that will be the default language set on the phone at the time of use. This means that any secondary languages that multilingual users use while communicating may not be eligible for summary features.

While One UI can easily prioritize notifications from favorite contacts regardless of language, it appears the feature may be limited to the phone’s default language – at least initially.

AI fraud detection during calls

In addition to these options, we also see hints at an AI fraud detection feature in One UI 8.5. We’ve seen the following strings referencing the function:

Code

Suspicious voice detection Using KT AI technology, it analyzes the caller's voice during a call and warns you if it sounds similar to a potentially fraudulent or altered voice.

This is likely similar to Google’s scam detection features that alert users to potential fraud by analyzing the caller’s tone of voice.

In particular, the KT mentioned above appears to refer to Korean Telecom. If this assumption is correct, the feature may initially be limited to the Korean language. We cannot determine whether these features will be available to users worldwide or not.

⚠️ A MOT disassembly helps predict features that may appear on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
