Mad Max: Fury Road
If you enjoy a good blockbuster in the summer and would like to do that from the comfort of your own house, I have a great choice for you today.
If you enjoy auto-striking through the desert in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, filled with bizarre characters, massive explosions and some of the best action scenes that have ever been filmed, look no further than Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller Landt on Netflix.
It’s hard to believe, but the film is actually ten years old. I remember that I saw it in theaters for the first time ten years ago and was completely blowing away. I have seen it several times since then and that feeling of pure awe never leaves behind. Even beyond the adrenaline -filled, heartbreaking action, there is simply something so incredible about this film and how it was filmed.
To begin with, director George Miller and artists, including Brendan McCarthy, came up with 3,500 panels with storyboards before work was done on the script itself. Miller, who had only written a short sketch at the moment, wanted to visualize the film and effectively created an extensive graphic novel in the process. The last cut of the film reflects these storyboards almost precisely.
The concept and storyboard work began in the late 90s, only 9/11 happened and plans to film in Africa were thwarted. Production moved to Australia, but floods left the landscape too green for a Mad Max film, and so well for a decade after all this started, the filming moved back to Namibia in 2012. Mel Gibson was originally planned to repeat his role as Max, but the delays made this impossible. Charlize Theron was cast as an imperator furiosa.
The story follows Max if he helps Furiosa to escape from the cowardly Warlord Immortan Joe (Hugh Kears-Ubrne) and his war boys, including Nux (Nicholas Hoult). Furiosa has liberated the slave friends of Immortan Joe, but the warlord does not let them go easily. What follows is one of the most intense, brilliant filmed cars that have ever been put in the film.
More than 200 bizarre cars are made for Fury Road And kept storage for years until the filming could begin. It is really one of the most insane cinematic works of all time and although I absolutely recommend you to view it on a 4K Blu-ray drive (or the black and white ‘Black and Chrome’ edition, which is Miller’s preferred version), it still looks great on Netflix. Miller wanted to release a silent version of the movie, but this never happened.
Netflix is also about to lose Furious: Mad Max Saga it serves as a prequel for Fury Road. Be sure to view them in the order they have been released, because the prequel functions better if you have already seen the original. While I recommend you to view the first three Mad Max Movies too, you certainly don’t have to go before you look Fury Road, What is effective a franchise starts more than a good follow -up. I thought Fiercely was excellent with great performances of stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a young furiosa and Chris Hemsworth as the rather demented warlord, dementus, although it is still not at the same level as Fury Road.
Make sure you also look at Ryan Coogler’s Sinnerwho just became available at streaming last week.
UPDATE 07/10/25
When you’re done with this and are looking for a number of other good action movies to enjoy Netflix, there are still a few suggestions here. These are all very different from Fury Road and from each other, so there should be something for everyone.
Train to Busan
One of the biggest zombie films ever made, Train To Busan is a South Korean film that makes shows like The Walking Dead Look downright pedestrian. A great cast of characters makes this even memorable and tragic. The film follows a workaholic father who tries to bring his daughter to her mother’s place. Unfortunately, a zombie outbreak takes place en route and things get out of hand quickly. It is excellent, but keep tissues nearby.
Read more about the film here.
Extraction 1 & 2
Chris Hemsworth plays a mercenary of the black market that is charged with saving the child of AA Crime Lord in the first film. The second continues the story of Tyler Hark as he takes on another dangerous mission. These are just extremely fun, very capable action films and Hemsworth is great in both. Admitted, these are not the “best” of the genre in the same way Fury Road And Train to Busan Being, but sometimes you just want something lighter.
The city
Ben Affleck’s second tear with director (after the excellent Disappeared baby) The city follows a group of Boston Bank Robbers as they face dangerous robberies and face their demons. Affleck leads in this as Doug Macray, a man who wants to clearly from life, but it is the crackling version of Jeremy Renner who steals the show. This is a really great bankrover film.
Midnight run
I had to record an older movie in this list, and Charles Grodin and Robert de Niro’s Midnight run Only the bill. The story follows ex-Cop and Bounty Hunter Jack Walsh (De Niro) while trying to announce a mob-accountant as the Duke (Grodin) to LA while being chased by rival Bounty Jagers and the FBI. It is very funny, extremely good and simply pleasant all around, in no small part thanks to the chemistry between the leads.
Dungeons & Dragons: honor among thieves
Not just my favorite movie of 2023, one of my favorite movies of the last decade. I loved Dungeons & Dragons so much: I think I have seen it three times in the theater and then I bought the 4K Blu-ray. It is really one of the greatest fantasy films of all time. I imposed it there with the Lord of the Rings and Willow and I am sure it is destined to be a great cult classic, even if we are not a follow -up. You don’t have to like D&D to enjoy this movie. The whole cast is perfect, the jokes are hilarious, the plot is well constructed and it succeeds in balancing the emotional journey together with enormous pleasure. Read my review here.
