One loss in six: How Michael Duff has steadied the ship at Wycombe Wanderers News: The72 – Football League News

Wycombe Wanderers appear to be building again after the appointment of Michael Duff appears to be going according to plan.

Wycombe Wanderers made a terrible start to their 2025/26 League One season. The Chairboys had made the play-offs the previous term despite losing their last three games of the season and were defeated in the semi-finals by eventual winners Charlton Athletic.

The Buckinghamshire side had lost Matt Bloomfield to Luton Town midway through last season and replaced him with Mike Dodds. The 39-year-old failed to meet Bloomfield’s standards and was fortunate to finish in the top six by the end of the 2024/2025 season.

After one league win to start the season and with the Chairboys in 19th place, Dodds was sacked and replaced by Michael Duff.

The 47-year-old was sacked by Huddersfield Town in March this year after they exited the play-off places with ten games remaining. Duff had also previously managed Cheltenham Town, Barnsley and Swansea City, with his greatest success coming from his time in Gloucestershire.

After ten games under the leadership of Wycombe Wanderers, the Northern Irishman is off to a fantastic start. If his reign continues at the same level, the Chairboys could have a season to remember with many games left in the season.

Michael Duff has made a fantastic start

Since becoming head coach of Wycombe Wanderers in mid-September, Duff has lost just once in League One. The Chairboys are currently 17th in the table but appear to be in no real danger of relegation.

The 47-year-old has won six games in all competitions since taking charge of the Buckinghamshire team. His team even took Fulham to penalties in the EFL Cup.

The recent win over Huddersfield Town was Duff’s biggest win yet for the Chairboys. A victory in the first round of the FA Cup also marks a positive start to his time at Adams Park.

Are the play-offs a possibility for Wycombe Wanderers?

Wycombe Wanderers have a history of overachieving with their available squad. Richard Kone’s goals were a huge advantage last season, and Cauley Woodrow can be that man this season.

Despite only moving up two places since Dodds’ dismissal, the Chairboys are nine points clear of the top six, and a positive run from now to the new year could turn things around.

The Buckinghamshire side are also yet to lose at home under Duff in charge, and their form at Adams Park could be a crucial factor in determining where they finish this campaign.
