Omar Cooper Jr. | WR | Indiana

Height: 6’0”
Weight: 201 pounds.

Omar Cooper Jr. was a three-star prospect out of Lawrence North High School who committed to play his college football at Indiana. He spent his first two seasons without making much of an impact as Indiana was not a strong program at the time.

Once Curt Cignetti was hired, things started to change for Cooper Jr. During his junior year, he averaged an impressive 21.2 yards per reception and finished second on the team in both receiving yards and touchdowns, emerging as one of the offense’s top playmakers.

During Cooper Jr.’s senior year. at Indiana he broke out with a huge season, totaling 937 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. He led the team in both receptions and receiving yards. He also closed the gap between himself and fellow newcomer Elijah Sarratt during Indiana’s magical season, proving he could be just as impactful in high-leverage moments. For his performance, Cooper earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors and was named a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist.

Rookie profile | Strengths and weaknesses

Omar Cooper Jr. is an electrical type of receiver. His solid speed allows him to easily generate yards after the catch. He is a complete route runner with good pace and tempo, and he is a master at using deception against defenders.

He should be able to create separation at the next level and use a quick release off the line to gain that space early in routes. He has some nervousness in his game, which put him in the top 10 in forced missed tackles. He is also a natural ball tracker and can smoothly locate and adapt to the football on the field.

Although Cooper Jr. is someone who finds it exciting to watch on film, there are some things that should be considered negative in his playing.

He doesn’t win very often vertically, even with his speed. His catch radius is short, which can limit him if he doesn’t create separation on plays. His route tree also needs to be refined and expanded somewhat at the next level. His blocking is below average, which begs the question of whether he will strictly be a slot receiver. If that doesn’t improve, it could limit his field usage in certain situations.

His lead could fall behind immediately afterwards Ladd McConkey at the next level when everything is right for him in the right system. His floor is more in line with Jayden Reed a productive receiver who can win and be used in different spots on the field.

On the first playback of the video above, you’ll see Cooper’s sneaky route as he gets behind the defender and opens up, allowing his quarterback to zip the ball in for a touchdown. On the next play you will see Cooper Jr. releasing at the top of his route, distancing himself from the defender and opening up to make the catch. You also see his ability to pick up yards after the catch. Both plays showcase exactly what Cooper has consistently shown in his All-22 film in our film room.

Concept Capital | Potential landing sites

Omar Cooper Jr. likely to be a Day 2 pick in the NFL Draft. I think a few teams that could use his help are San Francisco 49ers and the Cleveland Browns.

Cooper Jr.’s skills should fit what Kyle Shanahan likes to do on offense. He is very versatile and can move all over the field, line up inside or outside and be used in a variety of ways to create mismatches. The Browns could use his speed underneath on offense and someone to give the unit a spark, which Cooper Jr. could easily do. He has the ability to power the passing game and help stretch the defense in different areas of the field.
