On Monday, the latest news from M16 was that Ruben Amorim no longer had a job. INEOS had opted to part ways with the Portuguese tactician after he ultimately admitted he was not the right man to return Manchester United to their glory days.

Fletcher steps up

In the immediate aftermath, Darren Fletcher stepped up to fill the void on Manchester United’s technical bench. Assisted by Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion, he oversaw the side as they battled to a 1–1 draw against Burnley.

The trio are expected to be in the dugout again when United host Brighton at Old Trafford in the third round of the FA Cup. However, by then the club is expected to have decided who will serve as acting head coach until the end of the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Michael Carrick are tipped to take on the role.

Janitor inside as the search for the permanent head coach continues

But while a caretaker stabilizes the ship, the more pressing work of naming the next permanent head coach continues behind the scenes. There is already speculation about who the Red Devils could turn to.

Glasner links

Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner has emerged as a leading candidate, with the latest reports suggesting his links with United carry weight. Glasner has brilliantly transformed Palace from relegation battlers to a side competing in Europe.

Although Palace are keen to keep him long-term, his contract expires in the summer and when he does it is widely expected he will leave Selhurst Park. United could be his next destination, with The Peoples Person reporting that Glasner had already been contacted about the job weeks before Amorim’s sacking.

As the Glasner saga gathers pace, an intriguing bombshell is dropped: the 51-year-old tactician has already outlined his requirements if he is to take charge at Old Trafford.

Glasner has one important claim

“Glasner would need ironclad guarantees of substantial financial support in the transfer market before committing to the Red Devils,” reports Fraser Fletcher of Team conversation.

“His main condition revolves around transfer guarantees so that he has the resources to reshape the team in his image. Oliver is not one to take on a new project without the resources to succeed.”

The German coach would be wise to make his position clear before embarking on such a project.

Much has been said about why Amorim was sacked, but in the run-up to his sacking it was clear that he cut a frustrated figure, not only as his tactics came under scrutiny, but also because the club was reluctant to back him in the winter transfer market as he had expected.

Without certainty in the transfer market, every manager is inevitably paralyzed. And with United fans as demanding as they are, the next head coach will need those guarantees if he wants to deliver.

Whether INEOS agrees to Glasner’s non-negotiables remains to be seen. But Glasner or not, whoever takes charge at Old Trafford will need heavy support if United are to return to the top flight where they belong.
