Oliver Ekman-Larsson takes responsibility after Berube calls up Leafs leadership group

During Tuesday’s edition of Leafs Morning Take, Nick Alberga spoke with veteran defender Oliver Ekman-Larsson for an exclusive interview after the loss to the Oilers. Ekman-Larsson spoke about the sentiment in the locker room after the game and what they heard from their coach.

“I think the message was pretty simple,” he said. “Chief is a straight shooter and I think everyone knows we win as a team, we lose as a team. We’re an experienced team. I think everyone has to contribute and be better, that’s what it comes down to. We’re not pointing fingers at anyone, we know everyone has to pitch in and be a teammate and just be a man and play better. I think that’s what it comes down to.”

The dismal start to this season has raised questions about who is to blame, but ultimately the entire team must now step up, starting with the veterans. After Saturday night’s game, Morgan Rielly and Scott Laughton raised Toronto’s inability to execute the full 60 minutes, and Ekman-Larsson discussed that issue with Alberga.

“We’ve played some good hockey here over the last 10 games and gotten some points, but it seems like the last two thirds haven’t been good enough,” he said. “And before that, the second periods were really bad. I’ve figured it out a little bit, but we have to be better. We have to be able to play well for 60 minutes, that’s what it comes down to. We’re making some bad results.”

Against the Oilers, three unanswered goals in the third period saw the game slip away from the Leafs, just as the San Jose Sharks’ late marker in the final frame cost Toronto a win two nights earlier. But as Ekman-Larsson said, earlier this season it was the team’s efforts in the second period that cost them important points. Heading into the new year, it’s up to the Maple Leafs to show they hear Berube’s message and get ready to play 60 minutes every night.
