Old friends

Old friends

Although I recently complained about the former card bloggers who disappeared from the virtual card world – you couldn’t tell you what they are doing or even if they live – there are still numerous former bloggers I see on other social media sites. That is one of the reasons why I have not only been a blogger since the rise of other social media forms.

Although blogging is easily my favorite platform for cards, communicating with old blog friends is in more informal ways, whether it is Twitter or Blue Sky or anywhere, a little simpler, casual-like and a little nicer (sometimes). They are random card thoughts and conversations in easy snacks. Another plus – comes from nowhere. You start the day without the intention to exchange cards and 20 minutes later I exchange office.

I recently sent a few current Tigers cards to ex-blogger/ex-Twitterer Boobie MaineThat is now in the map (and music) conversation on Blue Sky. I have known too many Tigers fans lately and none of them is now satisfied.

But luckily before the depression struck, he sent some cards back to me, which is very cool of someone I knew 15 years ago for the first time. Those blogging of old friends are special.

The package started small, with a sticker I know well. It is from the 1982 tops set and the sticker recognizes Pedro Guerrero’s Epic Game 6 in the World Series 1981. I have a few copies of this card and at least one is fixed. Time to keep one (if it stuck after all these years).

TOPPS did not do a great job in 1982 in recognizing the title of the World Series of Dodgers, but it is still better than the recognition of Topps of the 2024 title in this year’s set. Where are the cards, topps ????

A whole mess of tops stickers of the teenagers followed. These are just the one I needed, there were quite a few more. I did not do this great to collect it, so I like them, but it will take a day to find out how they store.

Somewhere around 2014, 2015 Topps reduce the paper quality of the stickers (the first three there, from 2011, 12 and 13 are much stronger).

Quite clear that Boobie Maine opened a considerable amount of archives. Most of these are last year’s set (all former needs!). The only exception is the Bernie Williams, which comes from the 2019 set. It is one of the rarer minis – I think that is only my third or fourth!

A nice Sepia parallel from Pee Wee Reese from 2024 Stadium Club. The foil parts are now green. They used to be the Orange, which I liked a lot better (some of the orange parallels of SC -SETS of seven, eight years ago are really cool).

Finally … this:

A Dodger-Mis, my favorite set of all time. You can’t beat that except this card! It has two Dodgers maps. I am sure there are other abuses with the same team, but this is the first in my collection.

With a little search on Blue Sky -er, that informal collecting talk has been re -paid – Shlabotnik report Discovered that the player shares the card with Tommy John is Davey Lopes.

With only the John Card as my source, I could only reduce to Lopes, Bill Russell and Ken McMullen – all of which appear on cards with a brown border at the top. But Shlabotnik found a photo of a complete sheet from 1975.

I also have the same on my blog, which I dug up:

Tommy John is the fifth card on the fourth row and Lopes is directly below him.

So there you go. I am still learning and still communicate with the collectors that I first met on the blogs all those years ago. Finding new cards for my collection.

This online collection world is still pretty great, wherever you are. It is really a matter of taste. What I avoid (YouTube/X) or just ignore (Facebook/Instagram), others can prefer. Finding like -minded friends and such.

I found my collecting friends. They started on the blogs.
