The Edmonton Oil Companies made some notable moves on Tuesday, signaling both short-term adjustments and long-term intentions as the trade deadline approaches. Defender Alec Regula has been loaned out to the Bakersfield Condors for a fitness period, while Paul Coffey officially returning to the Oilerstechnical staff.
All told, the decisions reflect a team that has refined its defensive structure while eyeing bigger upgrades ahead of the deadline.
Regula gets reset option in Bakersfield
Regula’s loan to Bakersfield is not entirely unexpected. The 25-year-old has struggled to find his feet this year, which is no surprise considering he essentially missed all of last season. Getting back into the NHL groove after a full season off isn’t easy, especially on a team with Cup aspirations.
In limited play, Regula looked tentative at times. His decision-making under pressure wasn’t always clear, and the timing that comes with a confident NHL defenseman is understandably absent. Conditioning commands are often as much about a reset as they are about punishment – and in this case, that’s exactly what this is.
Bakersfield offers Regula something he hasn’t had in a while: consistent ice time. Top-pair action in the AHL, special teams play and game-to-game consistency can work wonders for a player trying to rebuild his game. Instead of scattered NHL action or watching from the press, he’ll get a chance to rebuild his confidence and sharpen his decision-making.
For the Oilers, this trade also offers roster flexibility. It gives the coaching staff the chance to rely on established players, while Regula gets the chance to get back into shape.
Coffey’s return brings stability and swagger
The bigger headline, however, is Paul Coffey returning to the bench.
The impact of Coffey’s presence on the bench is already palpable. When Coffey was in the defensive coaching role the past two seasons, the Oilers’ defense improved significantly, especially in the passing and transition areas. The team was more aggressive in the transition to attack and also improved their structure in the defensive zone.
Coffey offers instant credibility. As one of the all-time best defensemen in NHL history, his voice carries weight in the room. But it’s not just his resume that matters; It’s his communication style and his understanding of the role of today’s attacking defender that really matters. Coffey encourages defenders to trust their instincts while holding them accountable for their own goals.
Thanks to Coffey’s tutelage in the past, Edmonton defensemen seemed more confident in moving the puck quickly and effectively. This is especially important for a team that has speed up front. When the Oilers defensemen move the puck well, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl become even more lethal on the rush.
His return signals that the organization is looking for stability and structure on the back end as the playoffs continue.
Deadline work is still necessary
Even with Coffey in the ranks and Regula re-establishing himself in Bakersfield, the Oilers still have a long way to go.
The defense corps still lacks a solid, shutout top-four blueliner who can play big minutes against the best of the best. Edmonton could use a reliable, defensively solid blueliner who can kill penalties and play well in tough situations – especially with playoff hockey on the horizon.
On the other hand, the Oilers still need help up front. The secondary has been inconsistent, and a versatile top-nine forward would be a huge relief to the top line while providing insurance against injury.
The Oilers are clearly playing their cards carefully. Today’s moves indicate a team committed to internal development and finding leadership on the bench. Coffey provides stability. Regula offers development opportunities. But if the Oilers are serious about maximizing their championship window, they still need outside help.
Look to the Oilers for defensive help and forward depth in the coming weeks. Today’s steps may not have been exciting, but they were deliberate – and could be the first steps toward a more complete roster come deadline day.
