The Edmonton Oilers have been involved in their fair share of speculation in recent weeks as they have had inconsistent goaltending and cannot find a way to put together a winning streak, and reports of their connection to someone new seem to come out every day. Recently they were linked to St. Jordan Binnington of Louis Bluesbut earlier today they were linked to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Tristan Jarry.
👀 I’m told twice @NHL All Star and @penguins Goalkeeper Tristan Jarry is one of them
the goalkeepers attract significant interest as
a possible option for the @EdmontonOilers Keep in mind he was playing
in Edmonton with the Oil Kings.#HockeyX pic.twitter.com/gDcqv6TOBO— Kevin Weekes (@KevinWeekes) November 26, 2025
Jarry, who is 30 years old, has played seven games this season, winning five of them, while posting a 2.60 goals-against average (GAA), a .911 save percentage (SV%) and a 4.8 goals-above-expected-goals average (GSAX). The veteran has played 300 games in his career, winning 157, posting 22 shutouts and a GAA of 2.75 with an SV% of .909.

As Weekes notes in his report, Jarry has played in Edmonton before, having spent time in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Edmonton Oil Kings between the 2011-2012 and 2014-2015 seasons.
While Calvin Pickard and Stuart Skinner continue to struggle, it’s no surprise that the Oilers are increasingly being linked to new goaltenders. If they want to have any chance of turning things around and making another deep playoff run, they need to make some changes, so the fact that they appear to be getting aggressive on the trade front is a positive sign.
How would a transaction work?
Jarry is signed through the 2027-2028 season and has a cap hit of $5,375,000. The Oilers would have to find a way to free up that amount of cap space to make a deal work, which shouldn’t be too difficult. Moving both Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak gives them $5,350,000 to work with, and they could make some other roster moves to pay for him.
There are a number of things to take into account. The Penguins probably don’t want to bring in a new goaltender, so the Oilers should trade Skinner elsewhere. Additionally, Jarry has some trade protection with a 12-team no-trade list, but considering he likely feels comfortable returning to Edmonton because he has some history in the city, that shouldn’t be an issue.
After all that, it’s a matter of convincing the Penguins to move on from Jarry. They might be interested in moving a goaltender, as they have three NHL-ready, but they won’t just give one away.
Realistically, the Oilers should give them Kulak, Maxim Berezkin and a conditional first-round pick on Jarry. If the Penguins are somehow retained, the deal likely includes a second-round pick or one prospect like Quinn Hutson or Beau Akey.
Either way, it looks like the Oilers have finally gotten aggressive on the trade front and are looking to make some moves. After Skinner’s recent struggles, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get moved and the Oilers make a change between the pipes.
There seems to be smoke behind a possible move, but nothing seems imminent at this point. For now, fans will just have to stay tuned and see if anything comes of the speculation.
