Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch says he is hopeful Zach Hyman can make his return in the first week of November – as early as November 1. After the Oilers’ practice on Thursday, Knoblauch noted that Hyman is optimistic and upbeat, practicing with the team and getting closer to returning to games.
Hyman suffered a wrist injury during Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Stars. He collided with Mason Marchment in the neutral zone and never returned to playoff action. Hyman broke and damaged ligaments in his wrist during the playoffs last season, requiring surgery.
Hyman’s return could boost the Oilers’ struggling offense. With just 18 goals in seven games and Connor McDavid fresh off his first of the season, Hyman’s presence adds another scoring threat that could help Edmonton regain its form as a Pacific Division contender.
McDavid said ahead of Thursday night’s game against the Montreal Canadiens: “The whole thing seems a little off right now. I thought we created a lot in the first two games, but it went dry on the road. We have to get it back, and tonight presents a good opportunity.” It’s clear McDavid is missing his regular winger, and while Matt Savoie will get a look on Thursday, it will be big to have Hyman back in a few days.
