The Blue Jackets started this one with a 7-7-0 record. They came in on a three-game losing streak and were last in a very strong Metropolitan Division.
The Oilers were 6-6-4 to start this one. They also came in looking to snap a three-game skid, and they remained seventh in the Pacific Division.
The Oilers took this 5-4 in extra time. Here is your game overview.
Summary of the game
Sparks flew early as Trent Frederic and Mathieu Olivier dropped the gloves and exchanged huge punches just over two minutes into the match. The first period was physical. It would be the Blue Jackets who struck first, as Ivan Provorov’s shot looked for his third of the season. Edmonton answered late in the frame when Jake Walman hit a fadeaway-style shot from the point to tie things up. The game remained tied going into the first intermission, with the shots favoring the Oilers at 7-4.
The second period started quickly as Columbus hit just 1:39 into the frame. Sean Monahan buried his own rebound to take back the lead for his team. Most of the period was very quiet and Edmonton was surrounded several times. The Blue Jackets struck again with a few minutes left on a smooth tip from Boone Jenner, making it 3-1 at the second intermission. They also took the lead on the shot at 15-12.
The final period started quickly, just like the second, but this time for the Oilers. Connor McDavid danced around the defense and threw a backhand at the other end past Jet Greaves to reduce the deficit. Shortly after, McDavid would head to the box with Zach Aston-Reese. In the ensuing four-on-four, Columbus restored their two-goal lead thanks to Adam Fantilli hitting one home.

The Oilers would then counter again with just over six minutes to play. It was McDavid again with a mad dash to the net and a quick move to slot one past Greaves. And finally, with 57.9 seconds left in regulation, Walman got a generous tip and launched the Oilers all the way back into it and forced overtime. The match was tied 4-4 heading into the extra frame, with the shots at 22-18 in Edmonton’s favor.
In overtime it took almost no time. The Oilers took advantage of the momentum and Jack Roslovic took a Walman feed all the way through the ice to seal the deal. The final score was 5-4 Edmonton, and the shots were 24-19 for them as well.
There were some excellent performers on the ice tonight in this crazy match. Jenner and Fantilli led the way for the Blue Jackets with two points each. As for the victorious Oilers, Walman had two goals and a helper, McDavid had a pair of goals and Roslovic also had the game-winner and an assist.
The Blue Jackets’ next game is tomorrow night (November 11) to conclude this five-game road trip. They’ll be at Climate Pledge Arena to face the Seattle Kraken, with puck drop at 8:00 PM MDT.
The Oilers’ next game is Wednesday night (November 12) when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers at Xfinity Mobile Arena. The Puck Drop is scheduled for 5:30 PM MDT. This kicks off a seven-game road trip for Edmonton, including a visit to Columbus on Thursday night (Nov. 13). Puck will also drop at 5:30 PM MDT for that.
